Hi All
After having been in an accident in November 2022 our 1997 Tdi 110 Camper was scrapped. We had it rebuilt (at great cost I must add). Pon Steyn is Somerset West did a great job, the vehicle looks fantastic. But I now need to insure it again. Any advice on where to go for insurance with such a vehicle? I am not convinced that the run of the mill insurance companies, e.g. Santam, have the mecahnism to insure such special vehicles.
Thanks
Vivian Geicke

I'm not a huge fan of them, but try Tuffstuff.

Santam will insure it at an agreed value, subject to two written valuations from a recognised club or dealer, as will Cross Country Insurance Consultants.

Note Cross Country’s policy is better geared to the overlander and off-roader, but comes at a cost. Cross Country will require a tracking device with telematics capability, or their smartphone app be installed.

Santam offer discounts on vehicles that do limited mileage, categorised as follows:

0 to 5,000kms per annum

5,001 to 10,000kms per annum

10,001 to 15,000kms per annum

Anything over 15,000kms is regarded as “normal”.

Both offer extended territorial limits, but Cross Country’s cover in this respect, is far broader.

Is your truck registered as a Code 2 (used) or Code 3 (rebuild)? If a Code 3, insurers may cover it a reduced value, or decline to cover it all, depending on their underwriter’s criteria.

There are other specialist 4x4 insurers, for example, TuffStuff, True Grit, and some underwriting managers also offer suitable policies.

Hi Viv

My experience with Tuffstuff /Ream has been very positive:

- Insured my defender 110 for the value I wanted

- didn't blink when I flipped the vehicle at an off road  club event

- Their assessor / the panelbeater and I came to a very reasonable compromise to not write the vehicle off and keep it as a Code 1.

After this experience I asked them to quote on the rest of my insurance portfolio. Their household contents was very competitive,  but home structure (albeit a thatch home) and the civilian vehicles were not. Clearly they know their niche and I'm very happy with that.

Cheers

Neale
