Black Community Developers is a local non-profit agency dedicated to
addressing the harsh realities of inner city life. Its headquarters,
located next to Theresa Hoover United Methodist Church at 12th &
Cedar, it in a prime location for meeting the needs of Little Rock's
most desperate. They have a highly successful Chemical Dependency
Counseling program, as well as shelters for homeless and abused
people.

Gerald Cound, a fellow Green Drinks member and sole construction
consultant for Crossroads Green, has been a large part of the
initiative to expand the role of BCD in the community. He is
currently heading up a new initiative for the organization in the form
of a building that we currently call the EcoArt House. A house
located across the street from the Hinton Neighborhood Resource Center
is being renovated to be environmentally friendly in many ways, and
the land around it is being converted into ornate gardens and arts &
crafts areas.

The goal of the facility is to help the needy in the neighborhood
associate environmental consciousness and creativity with a way out of
their given dire situations. Classes on pottery, masonry, recycling,
conservation, and many other topics involved in art and green living
will be taught at the facility. This is something so innovative that
few comparable operations can be identified anywhere in the US. We
are confident that the facility will make a very large ripple in
Little Rock and Central Arkansas at large.

Gerald has been doing all the work virtually alone. He has been
raising his own funds, and he has been doing his own manual labor.
For a time he wasn't sure if the project would be tenable, but
recently there has been a shift in public support and attention. More
people are offering monetary aid and help with labor. You are invited
to contribute. If you would like to make a monetary contribution,
please make it out to "Black Community Developers" and mail it to 109
Linwood Court, Little Rock, AR 72205. Even more appreciated, if you
would like to give some time to come tour the facility and maybe help
through some manual labor, please call Gerald at (501) 749-6812 to
arrange it, or call me at (918) 510-9735. We are out there every
Saturday between 9:00 am and 11:00 am if not for much longer. I'll be
there alone this Saturday. Come visit!
