On 4th Dec 2022, Tamilprenuer organized an event called Grand Sangamam (a ticketed event ) at Anna University. The event was hosted by The Founder Mr. Shyam Siddarth and Co-Founder Praveen. The event started with a massive statement made by Mr.Praveen stating that their very "First Sangamam had only 50 people , cut today we have about 570 people in our 6th Grand sangamam ". Tamilprenuer is an initiative that supports entrepreneurs from Tamil Nadu. They have close to 1000+ entrepreneurs in their community. He went on to say that when they launched the Tamilprenuer startup, not even one person subscribed on the day of launch, even though they had 6000 followers on Instagram and 3000 on LinkedIn. The next day, however, they had 3 people paid and subscribed, 2 from Australia and one from the UAE.
Shyam also stated that he was part of an entrepreneur meetup in Bangalore attended by over 80 people. In such a huge crowd, only 3 of them were from Tamil Nadu, which was one main reason for him to start the Tamilprenuer forum for Tamil Nadu entrepreneurs. He was talking about his experience with how people judge the groom before marriage. When he first met his wife before marriage, he was prepared to explain the future of Tamilprenuer. Though his spouse came 30 mins late for the meeting, Their 150 mins long discussion was all about entrepreneurship and his startup the whole time .
The speakers of the event included Mr. Sivarajah Ramanathan , CEO of Tansim. He talked about how his department functions differently from other government departments, and why the government has appointed an industry person to run the department. And how Govt of TN provides all functionaries to support Startups
He also mentioned that in 2019, the central government ranked 25 states that promote entrepreneurship. In 2019, it was ranked 5th category (24th ranking), but has since moved up to 3rd category. He mentioned that as soon as he took the position, he collected data and submitted it to the central government., Currently, a lot of schemes are being introduced, and the speaker feels that in a couple of years Tamil Nadu will be in the top 5 rankings.
Next, we got to listen to an interaction between Mr.@Mohan K Founder of IPPO PAY and Mr. Prabhu Rangarajan Rangarajn , Co-founder of B2P fintech P ltd. The two had a casual chat . Though they both have invested in 6 different startups together, including Veg Route and other companies, the interesting fact is that Mr. Prabhu has invested in a few startups without even meeting the founders because it was evaluated by Mr. Mohan himself.
When Mr. Mohan asked about the first meeting and Prabhu's opinion on the same, Mr. Prabhu questioned how Ippo Pay could be different from the other payment gateway providers when there are already so many of the same in the market. Here, I would like to quote one of the participants from Bangalore who traveled to listen to his talk. He saw a tea stall vendor in Srirangam who had Ippo Pay enabled and saw the success of Ippo Pay's digital payments. Recently, they crossed 800 crore transactions in their network. Also, he added that there were VCs who rejected him just because he identified as BLACK and also cuz he chose a Tamil word - Ippo Pay (Ippo is a Tamil word which means "now") to name his brand .
Mr. Suresh Kumar Gunasekaran the Founder of the Pepul social media app, spoke about what stops people from getting into entrepreneurship and how he left his high-paying job in the US to start his journey as an entrepreneur. He stated that if you yourself have your idea as just an idea , No investor is gonna invest their time into listening to your idea which you yourself don't have confidence in ."Zoho is a 1 trillion company but people forget their 25 years of hard effort" He quoted.
The Hosts then encouraged questions from attendees to the VCs , one of which was "Why are VCs not ready to fund idea-stage companies?" This question was refused by two of the VCs, The other two bravely took up the mike who gave examples of how and where they had funded in the past. The event ended with a networking dinner.
Other entrepreneurs whom I got to meet were Mr.Shyam , of Veg route, Mr. Sudharsanan Ganapathy , Founder of a Social Media company, Mr. Kennet Alphy , Ms. Sakthi Ektha N Ekta , Head Content - Social media Company , Ms. Vinusha MK , Founder of Four season Pastry, Mr. Sriram Prasad G of Keerai Kadai, Mr.Srivats and Mr.Sudhersanan, Co Founder of Jingelbid , Mr.Ashik Rahman of Properlor Technologies, Overall the event is one hell of an opportunity for networking and learning with entertainment throughout! Indeed, which Tamilian and entrepreneur would not want to meet the people who belong to their same community?
He also flagged off the Kashi Tamil Sangamam Express between Varanasi and Kanyakumari on the occasion. The sangamam, which will be held from December 17-31, will see the participation of 1,400 dignitaries, including students, teachers, farmers, writers and spiritual leaders, from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
The sangamam aims at rediscovering, reaffirming and celebrating the age-old links between Tamil Nadu and Kashi, two of the country's most important and ancient seats of learning. The first edition was a month-long event organised last year.
"The Kashi Tamil Sangamam is a continuous flow, which continuously strengthens the feeling of 'Ek Bharat, Shresth Bharat'," the prime minister said, while crediting Adi Shankaracharya, Ramanujacharya and other ancient philosophers with creating the idea of India as a nation.
Mentioning the Sengol, a historical sceptre from Tamil Nadu installed in the Lok Sabha chamber of the new Parliament building, Modi said, "Under the guidance of Adheenam seers, this Sengol had become the symbol of transfer of power in 1947." "Saints such as Adi Shankaracharya and Ramanujacharya united India. They awakened the feeling of national consciousness of India through their yatras," Prime Minister Modi said.
Referring to the spiritual connect between Kashi and Tamil Nadu, he said, "Coming from Tamil Nadu to Kashi means coming from one home of Mahadev to his other home." "Coming from Tamil Nadu to Kashi means coming from the place of Madurai Meenakshi to Kashi Vishalakshi's place," he said in his speech in Hindi which was translated to Tamil in realtime by an artificial intelligence-based application 'Bhashini'.
The Kashi Tamil Sangamam programme will encompass lectures covering literature, ancient texts, philosophy, spirituality, music, dance, drama, yoga and ayurveda. In addition, seminars are planned on innovation, trade, knowledge exchange, edutech and next-gen technology.
In addition to the cultural exchange, an exhibition showcasing the rich tapestry of art, music, handloom, handicrafts, cuisines and other distinctive products from both Tamil Nadu and Kashi is also on the agenda, the statement said.
The Union Ministry of Education is the nodal agency for the event with participation from the ministries of culture, tourism, railways, textiles, food processing, MSME, information and broadcasting, skill development and entrepreneurship, IRCTC and related departments of the Uttar Pradesh government.
