Good News At Last!

Hello Friends of Franklin Trail,

We are pleased to announce the Franklin Trail project is beginning construction for Phase I of the trail which will go about two miles from the trailhead and end on Rancho Monte Alegre. We are currently requesting bids from general construction firms and all of the facilities required for the high school and Persoon sections will be included in one contract. Construction is planned for May 15th with completion of the Phase I build expected by the end of August. Concurrently, the mountain portion of the trail on the Horton Ranch (through the dense chaparral) will be constructed by the Santa Barbara Trails Council.

While we are excited to be moving forward with the construction of Phase I, until the trail construction is complete and the trail is officially announced as open, we ask that no one attempt to hike the area where the trail will be built. We appreciate the community's support in respecting the wishes of the landowners who have made it possible for us to gain access through their land to reopen this historic trail.

Many thanks,

Bud Girard and Jane Murray

Friends of Franklin Trail

The Friends of Franklin Trail has been working in cooperation with the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, Montecito Trails Foundation and Santa Barbara Trails Council to reopen this 5 mile multi-use trail. When completed, the trail will provide much needed access to the back- country and will be an amazing hiking, mountain biking and equestrian experience with breathtaking views of the Carpinteria Valley, the local coastline, and the Channel Islands beyond. The trail will also be an important component in the local network of trails linking the mountains and the backcountry to the State Park, the Carpinteria Salt Marsh and the Carpinteria Bluffs Nature Preserve.
