Hello everyone,
Ashish, Vikas, SMT, RD, Paryant, Kuldeep and Shekhar went to Pushpa
Gujral Science City (PGSC) for Night Sky watch in Kapurthala.
It was an exciting day full of new new things revolving around one
concept-"Science through fun & enjoyment"
We all started at 1215 hrs from collge campus and took a bus to bus
stand and another bus to PGSC. We reached there at 1330 hrs and after
buying tickets we started at 1350 hrs.

Brief description of PGSC, Kapurthala:
The foundation stone of the Science City was laid down by former Prime
Minister Sh. I. K. Gujral on October 17, 1997.
The Science City has been set up in 72 acres of land in the of heart
of Punjab, on Jalandhar- Kapurthala Road. It is intended to inclucate
the scientific aptitude & temperament, to fire the imagination and
creativity, foster the spirit of enquiry and exploration among the
masses, especially in the young minds.
The subject areas covered include physical, applied, natural and
social sciences, engineering, technology, agriculture, health
sciences, energy, industries, human evolution and civilization, the
environment, ecosystems,
Jurassic parks as well as frontier areas like space, nuclear science,
information technology, robotics and Bio-technology...
The Kaputhala is at 992 and air pressure is 0.92 kg/sq. cm
More information: http://www.pgsciencecity.org/
1st hall is known as Science Voyage Hall:
It showcased different models and Simulation. Our first attraction was
a ball on surface but actual there was no ball. We also tried to touch
it but actually it was just a reflection. There were models of Space
Shuttle, Wright Brothers plane, Jacob’s ladder, Infinite well,
Bernoulli’s principle.
The main attractions in this hall are Virtual Simulation, 3D Show,
Laser show. In virtual simulation. Along with us there were kids from
different schools in their school uniform. Some of them had enjoyed
the ride for 4 times even 5 times.
Besides all of them there is a Space Theatre and Digital Planetarium
which shows different films to educate and entertain. At our time the
film themed "The Magic of Flight" which lasts for 40 minutes
showcasing how the man started flying starting from birds to space
shuttle.
"1st flight was taken by Wright Brothers on December 17, 1903. there
were four flights last one was 850+ feet. Then the film moved Blue
Angels team of US Navy moving above valleys, mountains etc. It was
exciting..."
There were revolving balls, power transmission gears, Mars globe,
Space suit in which you can flick photos of yours.
The Hall also has Laser shows, 3D shows which were cool and new to
many of us. Our boys enjoyed them a lot. Before the Laser show our own
Paryant sang few songs from movies and also added his own lyrics.
2nd hall was Science Explorium:
The hall has several sections. There were models of scanning electron
microscope, Foucault pendulum, Moire pattern, Vanishing ball. The main
attraction were skill game which Kuldeep played and was able to put
the steel ball in the middle. There was a mirror room in which we can
see our mirror images.
RD and Shekhar bicycle and also lit the head lamps and television. The
mechanical energy converts to electrical energy to switch on the lamps
and television. Shekhar lifted his own weight.
There was a vortex room. We all enjoyed them a lot. In this hall there
was "Virtual Reality Gallery". It was amazing to see what technology
can do. There you can play Tennis with computer using a real tennis
bat, you can also drive car by movement of your hand and also play
volley ball. The computer senses your hands movement and perfoms the
actions. There you can stand in front of a screen and the butterflies
will surround you.
The virtual gallery was something like the stuff showed in movies.
I can simply say that "We were living the dream"
Apart from the models inside the hall there was a MIG-23 fighter
aircraft.
These fighters are now grounded by IAF last year. You can only find
them on places like this. Another were a Torpedo and a tank.
There was a Dinosaurs Park where you can trek 248 million years back.
The park was full of Dinosaurs of all kinds. There was a protoype
volcano also.
In Energy park there is Solar Centre, Hydel Power Centre, Solar
Restaurant, Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant.
Night Sky Watch
After all this the Science city has its own Boating facility which
moves through the Dinosaurs Park. It was 1800 hrs and lights were on
and also it was time for the big event of the day- "Night Sky Watch"
The Night sky watch started at 1830 hrs on roof of Admin block. We
were introduced about the Astronomy by Mr. AkashDeep Singh. With us
there were school kids from Kapurthala. The second brightest planet is
Jupiter after Venus.
There were 2 reflector telescopes. One was a basic telescope
(Newtonian) with ~50X magnification, other was electronic telescope
which is operated electronically has lens with 8 inch diameter and
magnification of 80X.
Now it was time at 1855 hrs we saw Moon on the Newtonian Telescope
and its surface with craters on them. Guys it was really beautiful.
Specially the place which separates the bright and dark portions.
Vikas and SMT in their usual style silently admiring the beauty of
Moon. The image was a mirror image.
Now after Moon it was time for Jupiter. We saw Jupiter and 4 of its
satellites with the electronic telescope. 3 on right side and 1 on
left side. We also queried about the telescopes? How to learn
Astronomy? How further we can go in this field? It would be exiting
for every one of the group to know that Science city can also perform
Night Sky Watch in our college on request on suitable time. Then we
can perform it in more bigger way.
Finally it was 1930 hrs and time to go back to our den. Everyone of us
was hell excited and we all said in unison "Aj ka din kabhi nahi
bhulenge...Maza hi aa gaya..."
On our way back to exit gate of science city, starting with Paryant.
we all started singing songs. the first song was from movie Rock on,
then came 'mehfil mehfil a sama...'then 'o hasina zulfo wali...' 'jaba
pe laga laga...' 'nasha ye pyar ka nasha h...' and many more were
there.
We waited for bus. The bus came but didn't picked us. So we took lift
from a small truck open from back side. We all hop in and then the
journey back to Jalandhar started. Truck dropped us at Kapurthala
chowk where we all went to a nearby Gurudwara, had tea. In words of
Paryant, Ashish and SMT the garam chai was the tastiest chai they all
had in last 2 months after coming to college.
After hearing that Shekhar also had some chai. As he don’t take chai
so it doesn't matter much to him but it was good to have some tea
after the day. After that we reached Jalandhar bus stand and left RD
with bus going to Delhi as he has to go Phagwara. We left 6 had our
dinner with lassi. Back to search for bus, we noticed that the Bus
going to Delhi was still there, so we hop in the bus and journeyed
back to college. Now it was time to share our memories with others. We
inform about the day to Ramesh and Maya. As we told Maya about this on
phone she was so excited that she even came out in the gallery her
hostel. Our Boys were really excited to see such an excitement.
After that Paryant started march past and we all sang few songs. So
this was the day. Full of excitement, learning new things, knowing
science miarcles, and what else I can say I am out of words to explain
the day. The day was not well planned from our side but everything
from the morning to night turned well and good. Thanks to all who cam
and all those who enquired from text. We hope to make more visits to
Science city in future with all guys and girls- Ramesh, Maya,
Jitender, Abhik, Himani, Priyanka and all others who may not came
that day but were with us all the time.

Shekhar I must say, This was a fabulous note about your trip to the Science city. I could actually visualize all that was written, It shows the level of masti you all must have had. I would congratulate all those who got this rare opportunity (at least It is rare for people in Punjab) to closely view the night sky. I wish everybody could have gone, never mind I am sure a lot many Sky Watches are coming ahead.

I do not know the fresh youngsters that you mentioned in the post, Shekhar can you ask them to introduce themselves.

Keep the spirits high!!!

RoCk Onnn!!!!!
