Hey y'all, i'm going to be putting up Mapquest maps for the drop
locations i'm getting from Balloon Track. I know, i know, googlemaps
is the best ("true dat" "double true!") but harder to link to
directly. At least, it is for me.

So here is today, May 26th, with a rise rate of 1000 ft/min and a
burst altitude of 120,000 ft. Kilofeet?
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=address&latlongtype=decimal&latitude=45.3965&longitude=-122.0889

Pretty boring, only a thirty mile flight getting us just past Sandy.

But here is today, May 26th, with a rise rate of 800 ft/min and a
burst altitude of 120 kilofeet.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=address&latlongtype=decimal&latitude=45.371&longitude=-121.9659

Look at that! 6 more awesome miles!

I'm looking at the 10 day forecast on http://weather.unisys.com/gfsx/7d/gfsx_4panel_7d.html
and i'm sorry to say that the winds don't look like much faster, if at
all, over the coming week.

I'll keep updating this as the days get closer to launch and then i'll
probably stop, you know, after we launch.

Jonathan,
looks like getting our balloon back might not be that bad! But I think
Mark told us to figure out the timing of the cameras based on 1000fpm
and a 100,000 ft max altitude. If he told you something different then
let me know, otherwise maybe start tracking them with that. . .

Things look a lot cooler today, May 27 with a rise rate of 1000 feet
per minute and a burst altitude of 120,000 feet. That is, if you're
idea of cool is landing in the middle of a national forest.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=latlong&latlongtype=decimal&latitude=45.8869&longitude=-121.7519

If we change the flight to today, May 27 with a rise rate of 800 feet
per minute and a burst altitude of 120,000 feet, we get about 60 miles
of flight and we land just past the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
Give or take 10 to 20 miles.

The ten day forecast plot looks pretty boring, sadly. But then, if my
memory serves, then the forecast for today looked a lot more boring
yesterday than what we actually ended up with. So who knows?

Yeah, Mark thought maybe we should just see what would happen with a
rise rate of 800 ft. per minute. Not much different, so far, and i
think it was perhaps for a later launch, in an effort to get over the
mountains. Really depends on the winds. And, also, keep in mind that
this thing is basing all of its calculations on weather data from
Salem because there isn't any for P-town.

Anyway, i'm off to spend the night in a yurt. Tomorrow's post might be
a little late...

Actually, what i meant by "boring" was really slow upper atmospheric
winds, like in the 10-20 mph range. Slow winds means very little
balloon travel. Truth be told, that's about all i've been paying
attention to when it comes to the weather; sunny, cloudy, warm, cold,
it's all the same to me unless the winds are doing something.

Anyway, here's the projection for today, May 28 with a rise rate of

1000 feet per minute and a burst altitude of 120,000 feet.

http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=latlong&latlongtype=decimal&latitude=44.9171&longitude=-122.0779
Just a little further and we could be in a reservation!

For today, May 28 with a rise rate of 800 feet per minute and a burst
altitude of 120,000 feet, we get almost the same thing...
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=latlong&latlongtype=decimal&latitude=44.7907&longitude=-121.9527

So there's those. See you guys tomorrow!

Man, look at the awesome flight we could have taken today, May 29 with
a rise rate of 1000 feet per minute!
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=latlong&latlongtype=decimal&latitude=45.2525&longitude=-122.5542
I'm being sarcastic, by the way. That's a total flight distance of 15
miles.

We get about 8 more miles today, May 29 with a rise rate of 800 feet.
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&formtype=latlong&latlongtype=decimal&latitude=45.1958&longitude=-122.5295
Almost to Molalla!
