How can you assess the importance of the cultural influence in Amir's childhood and early adulthood?

The cultural difference between the two different types of Muslim Pashtuns and Shia's are that the Shia's are highly oppressed by the pashutuns. This pressure from Amir's society to not associate with Hassan due to their ethnic differences ties into Amir's reasoning for how cruel he reacts to Hassan after the incident in the alley.

In their society it was basically a pure blood or half blood or mudblood (Harry Potter) The pure Indies would believe that they are the superior in all ways. That's why Hassan was commonly beat and many others hid who they were, it was a pure society and if you were different you would be beaten basically.
