The Ugandan Martyrs
Over 100 years ago, 22 young men died for their faith rather than
compromise their beliefs. The best known of the martyrs is Charles
Lwanga, now the patron of youth. Lwanga and the other young men were
not afraid to profess their Christian faith in front of King Mwanga.
The King became very angry and ordered the young men, ranging in age
from 13 to 30, to be tortured. They endured horrible cruelty with
heroic courage and died nobly for Christ. They all were canonized by
Pope Paul VI in 1964. Their feast day is June 3.
