We are changing the approach to the world's leading cause of death, especially for the underserved. Better assessing cardiovascular and heart failure risk begins with creating affordable access to basic imaging of the heart. We have partnered with Portamedic and launched Caption Care to bring the most advanced AI-enabled technology into the homes of everyday Americans, to urgently address the soaring risk of heart disease," said Steve Cashman, Caption Health's Chief Executive Officer. "Given current heart failure guidelines and existing CMS payment models, Medicare Advantage plans will now have a scalable service to help them assess and manage the cardiovascular health for their millions of at-risk members."
Caption Care affords health providers, payers, and value-based care organizations the opportunity for greater reach into their communities by covering the last mile of access to ultrasounds for members. There is a significant and growing need for diagnostic-quality point-of-care ultrasound, not only for those with symptoms, but also to guide people at risk of developing heart disease to early interventions and improve outcomes. Caption Care addresses this with convenient, cost-effective cardiac ultrasound at scale to identify heart disease earlier, help prevent avoidable hospitalizations, and support improved outcomes.
Heart ultrasounds are the primary tool used to help identify heart failure, the most common diagnosis in the U.S. for hospitalized patients over the age of 65. It contributes to millions of deaths globally every year, but early symptoms like fatigue or shortness of breath are commonly confused for normal signs of aging. The result: a study showed 38% of new heart failure patients are diagnosed in acute care facilities, even though 46% of these patients had potential symptoms six months before diagnosis, when intervention would have had a greater impact in slowing disease progression. Doctors call heart failure "the silent killer" because it's so easy to ignore symptoms until it's too late, and it has remained a leading cause of death nationwide, with cases on the rise following the COVID pandemic.
"Portamedic has been a leader in mobile in-home services for 50 years through a network of over 4,000 technicians and 100 field offices across all 50 states, giving us trusted access to hundreds of thousands of households every year. Through our participation in Caption Care, we can now play a proactive role in helping combat the largest public health threat facing this country, and we're delighted to be stepping up to the challenge," said Jim Fritz, President and Chief Operating Officer of Portamedic. "With healthcare increasingly moving out of the hospital and into the home, Caption Health and Portamedic are well-positioned with our market-leading capabilities to bring ultrasound to people in the most comfortable and convenient settings."
"With the increase of cardiovascular disease and shortage of sonographers around the globe, innovations like the Vscan Air SL with Caption AI are hugely transformative in cardiac care, supporting rapid and confident assessments at the point of care," said cardiologist Jordan B. Strom, M.D., MSc. "AI guidance has enormous potential in ultrasound due to its ability to guide experts and relatively new users in retrieving diagnostic-quality information to make timely and accurate decisions and get patients on the right path sooner."
Caption AI provides real-time visual guidance to prompt users on probe movements and includes a quality meter to ensure the user obtains the best possible images. Once an image is captured, the AutoEF feature automatically calculates a left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF). In addition, users can efficiently scan with AutoCapture and Save Best Clip features to capture the best quality image from each view.
"The integration of Caption AI with the Vscan Air SL handheld ultrasound opens an entirely new chapter for cardiac screening. This technology empowers users with guidance and tools for high quality ultrasound scans and supports earlier detection of cardiac disease," said Roland Rott, president and CEO, Ultrasound, GE HealthCare. "The strategic acquisition of Caption Health in 2023 continues to expand the capabilities of our products and solidifies our leadership in ultrasound and the emerging artificial intelligence landscape."
In addition to Vscan Air SL, GE HealthCare will also showcase its suite of innovative products and solutions across the cardiology care pathway at ACC 2024, including CardioVisio for Atrial Fibrillation, a digital, patient-centric clinical decision support tool, which includes the most recent ACC guidelines. Telling the story of the heart with integrated cardiology technology, the comprehensive portfolio of cardiovascular solutions delivers across the full continuum of patient care from diagnosis and treatment all the way through post-treatment monitoring.
Following three years of meticulous planning, space design, construction and preparation, the enhanced and fully equipped spaces in the hospital will open for procedural services beginning March 19, with cardiovascular critical care services already underway.
At Emory Healthcare's opening celebration on March 12, cardiac surgeon Mani Daneshmand, MD, second from left, led tours through the new facilities, like this technologically robust hybrid operating room.
Construction was completed on 4T North last fall, and the CV-ICU fully opened in January 2024. On 3T, the EP labs, cath labs and preparation and recovery areas will begin their services on March 19, followed a week later by the cardiovascular and thoracic operating rooms, which will begin surgical procedures on March 26.
With the opening of the new heart and vascular spaces, Emory University Hospital has been in the process of recruiting more than 80 new staff members, of which more than half will be highly skilled nurses whose primary focus is cardiovascular care.
With the opening and expansion of the new heart and vascular spaces at Emory University Hospital, Emory experts will continue making a difference in the lives of Georgians by providing additional access and enhanced cardiovascular and thoracic care and technology to the community.

Sports cardiology is a rapidly expanding field with over 8 million active athletes in the United States and the average cardiologist sees at least five patient athletes a week. With these numbers growing daily, there is high demand for cardiovascular care teams who understand contemporary care and practice management strategies for athletes. Care of the Athletic Heart will provide you with guideline-driven, practical, cardiovascular care strategies to improve the care of your patient athletes. This is your chance to participate in engaging panel discussions, debates, research, and cases with your colleagues.
Goal
At the end of this course, participants should be able to identify guideline-driven, practical, cardiovascular care strategies for competitive, recreational, occupational, and tactical athletes.
Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants will be able to:Demonstrate appropriate interpretation of the athlete ECG, including use of the International Recommendations for Electrocardiographic Interpretation in Athletes.Select appropriate diagnostic studies, including cardiopulmonary exercise testing and cardiac imaging, for cardiovascular care of a broad spectrum of athlete patients.Articulate the nuances of interpreting the cardiovascular imaging of the athletic heart.Evaluate cardiovascular care strategies that address athletes with various cardiac conditions, including coronary artery disease, arrhythmias, and cardiomyopathies.Recognize the cardiovascular effects of extreme conditions and how they impact athlete patient evaluation and management.Identify the unique aspects of cardiovascular screening and disease management in tactical/occupational athletes.Apply best practices in shared decision-making for difficult cardiovascular care situations in athlete patients.Identify strategies to prevent sudden cardiac death in athletes including community involvement.
Target Audience
The primary target audience is the cardiologist and/or sports medicine clinician, including physicians and advanced practice providers (NP, CNS and PA), who provide care for the competitive, occupational, tactical, or recreational athlete. The secondary target audience are health care professionals engaged in the clinical care and evaluation of athletes, including athletic trainers, first responders, and exercise physiologists.
