Modbus TCP. Is it supported on a Gen 1 miniserver?

I am toying between the idea of either the modbus RTU extension and using modbus TCP.

Modbus TCP seems to have lots of advantages:

  • Wider variety of devices, such as a Denkovi MODBUS 16 way relay switch
  • Can test outside of the Loxone system
  • Can plug everything into a network switch
  • Can choose to have either a single, or multiple RTU/TCP bridge

Will my Gen 1 miniserver support Modbus TCP? I know that it does not support BACnet.

Is there anything I should know before I embark on this?

Many thanks, George

Hi George,

I am (or at least was) using Modbus TCP from my gen1 mini server to tap;k to my solar edge inverter.

I say was because I’ve actually moved to using an external script to interrogate the inverter because I could never get the mini server to send the read commands in the right order.  (In this case, I need to read 2 register simultaneously on the inverter - one for the vale and one for a ‘multiplier’ to apply too the value, I struggled to get the miniserver to issue the right read commands to do this and I kept getting the wrong values back because either the value or the multiplier would change in the time it took the mini server to issue two read commands at 5s apart.  I now understand a way around this is to read both the value in one command by telling the mini server to read 2 registers in one go and then unscrambling the result, I\ve never got around to trying this, and the external script remains in place)

Apart from that, the Modbus over TCP seemed to work well, its tricky as Modbus always seems to be to get the register numbers right, but I find thats often hard on Modbus RTU as well.  (I'm also running modbus RTU via an Modbus extension to talk to devices such as waveshare relays and eastron power meters that don’t have modbus TCP capability)

Hope that helps

Steve
