Hi all

Simple question, is anyone here running Config v13 on a Mac, and which VM do you use (Parallels, VMWare, Virtual Box)? Any issues?

I'm about to invest in a new Laptop and would much rather go Mac, but Loxone Config support is probably my main holdback now. The Network search for miniservers, and SD Card format feel like the most fragile bits, so knowing those work well would be a great help

Worst case I can dual boot, but I generally find that unsatisfactory. (It looks like VMware will launch a bootcamp Windows install under virtualization when needed too, which maybe a reasonable compromise: https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/1014618)

Cheers

Thanks for the replies!
I should have explicitly asked, this  would be with MacBook Pro M1 (Arm) chip.

I think the pointers to Parallels 18 confirms this is what others are using:

And looks like Parallels can also boot a bootcamp windows partition, so this would tick all the boxes

[for context, I've used Macbookss for years, but always provided in corporate env that have VMs blocked, so totally new to buying one or getting Windows onto it!]

Cheers

Hi,

You have to use Parallels and Windows 11 beta. It works perfectly however It's a beta product

I’ve run config on an Intel Mac using Virtual Box and VMware Fusion. On Virtual Box I was never able to do anything with the SD card, as you mentioned. Formatting and writing a card always failed. With VMware Fusion these work perfectly.

I have an M1 (Arm) Macbook Pro and Loxone Config runs perfectly with Parallels (I haven't formatted an SD card yet though).  Bootcamp is not supported on M1 Macs AFAIK.

I’m running Config 13 on an Intel Mac Pro using Fusion with no problems at all. As you say, not your proposed setup with an M1 Mac. Fusion seems to be lagging a bit but Parallels looks like the way to go. The gotcha is that for both you need to be running ARM edition of Windows 11 and I don’t know if Loxone Config 13 runs on Windows 11 ARM. Hopefully someone will have tried it…

I use Parallels and the only issue I have on occasion, is having to force/switch the network type between host and Wi-Fi. Not a Loxone specific issue though.

I used parallels for a few years but I got sick of the cost of it - you need(ed) to buy a new version every year when MacOS is updated so gave up and went dual boot.  That might only work as long as I've got an Intel MacBook still in use though....

About 1/3 of all PC's at Loxone's offices are Macs and we use Parallels. Works well.

With that in mind, it’s a shame that Loxone Config is windows-only.

Thanks for sharing this Florian! Can you confirm if any/many people at Loxone are on the ARM chipsets? M1/M2

Yeah, and with Config being Qt it makes a Mac port easy to wish for, but I totally appreciate how much extra cost that adds to release testing alone. (Especially for the next few years, during the Mac transition from Intel to ARM).
On the flip side, with this in mind I would expect egregious bugs in running on Mac+Parallels are much more likely to be found and fixed before releasing to a stable channel, so this news gives me confidence.

Thanks

No, sorry strangely I didn't get it. Thanks for confirming!

But also it's still a useful datapoint if Loxone staff are using it internally as that improves odds of it remaining supported on an ongoing basis over future release, vs working at this moment by happenstance.

We are using various M1 Macbooks with different M1 chips (Mac Mini, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro, ...) and also a couple of new M2 MacBook Airs

I'm using Parallels 17 and have no problems with it. (on an M1 Max Macbook Pro.)

Hi,

Anyone got any tips on formatting SD cards via parallels on M1 Macbook Pro?

The first thing I've noticed is that parallels won't mount anything from the internal SD-card reader, so I've dug out a USB-C->USB adapter and am trying to use an old USB SD-card reader.   Windows now sees the SD Card, but can't get it to appear in the "drives" list in the Loxone Config SD Card formatter utility.  Wondering if there is something I'm not doing right, this isn't supported or it's my SD card adapter.

Thanks,
