Smart meters in the UK

I have just registered to have a smart meter fitted in October by E.ON.

Has anyone integrated Loxone with one of these?  I quite like the idea of being able to trigger energy price changes into heating logic.  I can't find much detail about the meters fitted by E.ON to be able to figure out the integration point.  I also did see somewhere that they utilise zigbee but I guess until we see them can't know for sure.

I was going to start with Meter Reader AIR but that only works with Electricity. In theory once hooked up to Gas and Electricity, should be able accurately track energy and trigger logic.

I found the spec for the HAN (Home area network) as defined by the UK Government and it does use Zigbee.  I would expect Loxone to come out with something via Air Base or another box or a 3rd party integrator to something to bridge to the LAN.

http://www.utilityhelpline.co.uk/latest-news/is-this-the-end-for-smart-meters-with-on-site-displays/ suggests that depending on your supplier there may be online options for getting the data.

A link in software via HTTP may be easier than a hardware solution.   I know there area concerns about the security of this data which might make access more difficult.

E.on came a couple of days ago and fitted the smart meter to both gas and electric supplies. I can't find any easy way of picking up the zigbee HAN which I think is encrypted anyway. There is however a place to fit Loxone's meter reader air. I am considering this but at £93 a pop... not so sure. I would rather tap into the zigbee feed as the meters broadcast the suppliers rate etc keeping things easy.

From what the out of the box display shows it's really useful information. If it's true about the electric companies changing rates more frequently based on demand then basing heating, lighting and appliance logic on the output will become very powerful and allow us to really fine grain control energy use.

I know this was a long time ago but where did you get to? Had a chat with Eon and I think my gran knows more about how they work and the type of bus :-)

Not much joy so far. Since the second wave of smart meters, I haven’t been able to find any smart meter gateways that allow for live data data feeds from the zigbee HAN.

I'm not surprised.

There's been a lot of negative press about security/privacy concerns of smart meters.  Whist they use Zigbee they're made incompatible with any other Zigbee devices by design

Yeah I'm not too keen on data grabbers, so is there something you can put on the meter tails that can feed data back to the miniserver for logging? Seems like it should be very simple.

It sounds as if you're in the UK.  I didn't think anyone was offering variable energy pricing (except 'economy 7' overnight which is on a fixed schedule and by all accounts very rarely makes economic sense)

We could finally be getting there...

More and more CADs (Consumer Access Devices) are appearing...

This one apparently says you can ask your energy supplier to open up the HAN to setup the device.
