I looked out the window this morning to see that the beautiful new
mural at Haight/Fillmore was completey ruined by taggers last night.
I took a few videos as the project was being produced and am angry and
sad that this happened.

That really sucks. Anyone see the taggers/catch them on camera?

That is really sad... I saw a group of people out there working on
that mural and enjoying themselves over the weekend.
I always wonder if there's some sort of acrylic spray that can be put
on to protect the public works?
I wish SF would promote a campaign of civic pride, you know, not
stealing from the libraries, not defacing public works, promoting
this as a fucking great city (i moved here from DM, IA several
lifetimes ago) one would be proud to live in...
They do have bus station posters up over in Oakland that say "Oakland
is our home...don't trash it" or something...
it's cleaner over in Oakland

That whole corner/wall is under video surveillance.

If the video is reviewed they would definitely be able to see whoever did it.

RE: spray: Topher Delaney, an artist and landscape architect, mentioned at our general meeting that there IS a spray that you can put over murals that allows you to wash off the grafitti. Topher, could you give us the name of it again?

Walgreen's put the treatment on their building, now when they get a tag, they spray on some solution and the tag can be wiped off. I talked to Linzey from Upper Payground yesterday, she was upset about the tag on the mural but also all the huge red/, blue and black tags through out the neighborhood. She said, she talked to the artists and they will fix it. It was obviously a graffiti crew that came through LH on Saturday night. Some of the tag were hateful, some on Raja, Haight and Fillmore had hateful tags directed at gays. The house on the corner of Fillmore and Germaina had a tag about violence against women. These tags were all in red, some script as the red tag on the mural. On Sunday AM, I received a few calls about the tags, I painted over the tags on Raja and the house on Fillmore w/primer. Called the owners of the buildings also. Hate and gang tags need to be remove at once. I took pictures and sent them to the police. If anyone has a tag, I would suggest they do the same because if they ever caught them in the act, they will go through these pics for the DA.

You folks don't understand. Progressive SF doctrine tells us that graffiti/tagging is art.

Frankly, I'm not a big fan of that mural, but I guess it beats a beige
canvas for grafitti.

Does anyone have contact info for the artist of the old/new mural artist(s)? The New Santa Clara market at Haight and Scott used to have a nice mural before more and more graffiti moved it to the tipping point of....beige! I could talk to the family that owns the store and see if they'd be up for a new mural. Of course, the owner and artist would have to be willing and the public....whoa, I guess I'm getting into the issues of the Nevius article.

But, seriously, I'll ask the market. Certainly better than the weekly beige paint job.

Wow, you were in the right place at the right time. I think that mural
was tagged the day after they finished it. This was a treat for me to
see it completed. It was a beautiful work that would've been a great
addition to the neighborhood.....too bad the taggers had to ruin it
and then the building owner decided to go back to Carmen Banana. Ah
well....such is life in the LH.

Neighbors,
I just found out that after 14 years the Hanabi Restaurant on Haight
will be closing tomorrow night. The owners will be retiring and have
sold the restaurant to new owners who will open it up as another
Japanese Restaurant in Jan 2010.

I personally will miss them tremendously and I will miss the Sushi Chef
who plays great music. The current owners told me the new owners have
had a previous restaurant and are good people, one of the new owners is
a Sushi Chef and will be there.

If this is one of your favorite restaurants in the hood, stop by and
wish the the best.

What sad news. I just had dinner there tonight and no one said anything about it. I love the music AND the sushi there. I hope the new place is able to fill those large shoes.
