Break In at Oak & Pierce

My landlord has put up a scaffolding to paint our building on Oak and Pierce, complete with a very accessible ladder that goes all the way up to the top floor. We immediately made sure all of our windows were locked, valuables hidden and signed up for renter's insurance because it makes us an easy target to any burglars. Sadly, yet unsurprisingly, our upstairs neighbors left a window unlocked and someone snuck in during the middle of the day last week, stole 2 laptops and a few other valuables, and got away without any consequence. I believe they reported it to authorities and tried to contact our landlord about the scaffolding and ladder, but nothing has changed. Has anyone else had a similar situation, and is there any way to deter another thief from doing the same thing again?
