The Naked Eye space from when I moved here in 2000, that was taken
over by the poorly-attended Mexican Restaurant (with Hamburgers!), has
paper up over the windows.

Anyone know what will is going to happen? My hope is that it is a non-
restaurant establishment that doesn't sell t-shirts or cut hair. No
offense, we just have plenty of that here.

Also, is the Raja Indian closed too? The internet tells me that used
to be Hank's 500. I hope whatever moves in has an equally rememberable
name.

What about you? What do you want to see?

Later,
-- Greg

That is a great great space... I wish a video store would open again
in the neighborhood.
Gramophone/Video Control on Market and Church is closing this month,
although their Polk St store will remain open.
I have no interest in joining Netflicks because that evening walk to
the vid store was always great exercise for the dog.
Blockbuster is, of course, out of the question, so I guess I will have
to join Into Video on Hayes.

! Funny comment re: Hank's 500...

I would love to see a solid coffee joint pop in there, for lack of a better comparator, like a Ritual or Four Barrel, although it's rather large.  We have a lot of good cafes for relaxing or getting work done but no place that offers a good solid cup of coffee.  If Rosamunde's weren't already opening up another location in the Mission, I'd say they should move there and the smaller space could be for something else.  All this said, I bet it turns into a mediocre restaurant to eat up some of the drunken munchies market share.

I don't weep for the mex place. Yuck! I'm surprised they lasted as long as
they did.
I wouldn't mind another taqueria, more mex style than the salvadorean place
(shich is pretty good too). I like little Chihuahua a lot, but too many of
those $8 burritos will break the bank!

Which reminds me-Bean There is having a 15th Birthday Party Saturday 5-7. Since we both moved to the neighborhood at the same time, and I've spent countless wasted hours there, I feel an affinity.  I can't be at the party, tho, b/c I'll be outta town.  I'll send a card.

i kinda wish there was (room for) a simple gym in the hood. not yoga but a few big steppers a good sound system an elliptical thingama giggy etc. 20 bucks a month and id join in a flash! golds on market is the closest, and harvey milk has some free dance classes but a un pretentious gym would rock.

I think the neighborhood could do with a quality Mexican or Chinese
restaurant. As much as I love the idea of having a Four Barrel right
here, we already have several really good cafes already.

Personally, a gluten-free bakery would be my best choice, but that
seems a bit much to hope for.

Matthew, you may be in luck. The rumor is that a vegan bakery (perhaps with gluten free, too?) is opening up on the 400 block where Designer Brands used to be.

Is that where Rua hair and Parson's appliances was?  I heard rumors of a natural foods store, but it seems to be taking forever.

Anyone tried the Sushi Raw place? I feel bad for the Iraqi guys. God knows they tried. I thought there was going to be a food court there when they had both signs up in the transition. :-)

rb: There's an organic market going into the former Maire Rua salon on the
NE corner of Haight and Scott. Run by the same nice Palestinian guy (family?) as the market
across Haight from there. (The Santa Clara Market that used to have a nice mural before it succumbed to repeated tagging...now it's a beautiful shade of beige...sigh). I believe they also own the one next to Nopa as well.

I would love a specialty wine/beer store in the hood. A Four Barrell/Blue Bottle quality coffee place would be cool as well.

Anyone know about the laundromat on the sw corner of Pierce? The owner of Burger Joint told me a bar owner from Upper Haight had leased it.

Monroe, Sushi Raw is GOOD, great menu. But it's really expensive. :/

Inexpensive for sushi.  Any less and you should worry about the fish.

How you doing?  Sushi dinner this week?

I went to Sushi Raw last week for lunch. The menu resembles the other Japanese restaurant up by Fillmore.
They have those $10 bento boxes with the usual choices, but also a selsction of Udon and more modern sushi (Caterpillar Rolls, Rock-n-rolls, etc.) than the other place.
we had Monkfish liver that was interesting, but drowned in a vinigary sauce that didn't do it any favors. quality was average-good. I'd go back, but not often.

The wost thing about RAW is that they seem to have made an effort to collect the ugliest paintings in existence!  They're almost worse than staring at silent flat-screens.  They look like they were done by someone who lacked talent, but not drugs or primary colors.

Personally, I prefer walking over to Amasia on Noe for better sushi, sake specials, live music, and a better atmosphere in general. It's more expensive, better quality, and the staff is much more fun.

I have to agree with Trish here. A local gym with free weights and
and Universal machines would be so cool. I used to belong to Valencia
Gym in the Mission and that was the best shape I've ever been in. No
frills, no fussys, just a good solid workout experience.

There is a gym being built on the 300 block of Divis, across the street from Martini cleaners. Well, at least that is what Dennis from Martini tells me. It's right next to that dog supply store and has blue tile on the outside. I think it's also the space where that marijuana dispensary used to be. They've been in the midst of construction for a while, but I'm not sure what the hold up is, since it has looked almost finished for a while. It seems a weird place for a gym, but if it has what you need...

Yes yes!  There's that little neighborhood gym at Cole/Parnassus that's just about right.
Is that place big enough for gym/lockers/showers/classes etc.?  Is there a big downstairs space I wonder?  Most of the storefronts along that block have nice big backyards too.

Next to Kelly Moore?  Is that a gym?  From the fancy tin ceilings, I thought it was yet another trendy restaurant!

I would love a shipping and receiving outlet also.

One thing I would like to see, and this is just my own personal
interest and completely impractical, would be an antiques store.
I know Mickey's Monkey is close by, but their stuff is fun but too
kitsch, and the higher end stuff is in a collective on Fillmore and
Union called "Past Present".

My dream store would sell a mix of arch pieces, Victoriana, folk art,
religious items, retablos and santos, stained glass windows,
old prints, paintings, arts and crafts items, old light fixtures,
store signs, old European pottery, and so forth.

Now...thats not asking too much, is it? I had hoped Larry would open
his store up and sell, but I dont know if that will ever happen!
