Dear Friends,

I'm happy to finally pass along a concrete opportunity to volunteer to help a farm hit by Irene and Lee.  This isn't an official Mob; just passing along an organized event.  Please RSVP to this group if you're going to go so we can all be inspired by your effort, but also contact Common Ground directly.

Common Ground is a few miles from the Beacon MetroNorth station, an hour and 20 minute ride from Grand Central.  If you want to take the train up, email Farmer Tim at the address below to arrange for transport from train to farm.

Hi folks - Common Ground Farm is a non-profit organization operating a working farm on 11 acres at Stony Kill Environmental Center in Fishkill New York. (Website: www.commongroundfarm.org) Like many others, we have suffered tremendous losses in our fields due to Irene storm damage. We have lost more than 3/4 of our fall crops due to Irene. In addition, the heavy rains produced a run-off of topsoil (3 inches) from our farm leaving many beds with just piles of sand at the low ends.

We are purchasing compost with a generous grant received from the Dyson Foundation. We need many hands to help get the compost in place. Once the compost is spread the farmers will sow in cover crop seed. The crops will hold the compost in place over the winter.

The work day event is on Saturday, September 24th from 8am until 2pm at the farm on Route 9D, 2 miles north if I-84. Please bring a potluck dish to pass, as we will break at 12 noon for a potluck lunch. Also if you have them, please bring shovels, metal rakes and wheelbarrows.
