The issue I'm having is that when we try to print to the printer (Epson FX-890 Dot-matrix Printer), the queue gets cleared, but nothing actually gets printed. Before, we had a small D-Link DP-101p print server attached, and could print a test page from the web interface. No test pages from the computer will print. I have tried switching to USB, swapping printers with an exact model, removing and reinstalling the printer and drivers, resetting the printer, rebooting the computer hoping to reset any hardware glitches, and getting new cables. I'm out of ideas.
I often find it useful to try a Live Linux Distro such as a recent Ubuntu which will most likely have the driver built in. Use the USB port. See if it works with that and if it does that will eliminate the hardware. If you wanted you could set the Linux up to share the printer with others on the network.
NOTE - In the case your printer is not automatically found and configured go to System Settings -> Printers and click on the Add button to look for it manually. This method supports USB and Network printers on the same LAN. It also supports looking for the correct drivers for the printer, downloading them and basic configuration in the moment of installation.
You can even find from companies like HP, Epson an Canon an option to actually install the needed drivers from their sites. When you try to install some of the printers from this guys, if the driver is not on your Ubuntu version, you will get an option to download and install it. A case is the Epson L555 which downloads from Epson and supports Wireless printing, Wireless scanning and finding the printer on the LAN.
We are thinking in using C# java or anyhing to try another way. Also we are considering to buy more epson fx-890 and do nothing more. But we don't know if is a fx-890 feature or just an error of the printer.
So many tries, diferent configurations, diferent drivers, diferent pc and OS, for nothing. I consulted epson support, they told me to test diferent paper size and configurations, they says "it should print continuously if the page fits on paper" and gave me tips to try a test with two half-letter pages (ms word) and one physical letter paper, and nothing, it prints only the first and wait for another paper for second, on both printer models.
