Hey everyone,

I found a website service created specifically for groups called
GroupSpaces.

It's a bit restrictive on design and layout, but it has lots of useful
tools including:

# News
# Events - calendar where we can put meetings, special events,
training sessions etc)
# Forum - discuss ideas in public, like we do on Google Groups (this
feature could be disabled if we want to continue using Google Groups
as our forum).
# Wiki - share best practice, ideas, links etc.
# Files - share files and photos.
# Email - send emails to all the group members.

I've created a page. Please join the group and share your thoughts.

Jake,

You might want to check out project dirt .... has similar functionalities I think, and is a sort of facebook/linked in for green/ethical/community groups. Might help us network wider?

Good find Chris. It's worth us posting on their blog submission page to publicise what we are doing:

Our web presence:

Official website:
http://www.lceo.org.uk/

Google Group:
https://groups.google.com/forum/?fromgroups#!forum/low-carbon-east-oxford

Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/114840881866307/

Groupspaces:
http://groupspaces.com/LCEO/

Energy Share:
http://www.energyshare.com/low-carbon-east-oxford/

Energy Share is quite restrictive, as is Groupspaces (but less so).

Google Groups has recently changed its layout and is publishing our email addresses when we post, so we'll all get more spam. Not sure if they've always done this.

Most people use Facebook. Maybe that is the way to go, in conjunction with a basic one-page website and possibly a Twitter profile.

nice thanks jake.

the reason i mentioned this is because i see this problem of ICT tool selection by groups over and over. i think the solution is to switch from a debate about tools to one about how to use them. i am happy with any tool because in my view most can be appropriated to do what we might want.

i like what chris said - a major factor in selecting a tool would be maximising lcoe connections and getting dialogue on the issues we want. to me this means twitter with #lcoe hashtag since it is the most open of all the tools and it seems like most of the world use it. it also has good stats which if we're successful in harnessing traffic would help with funding proposals. it is also easy to turn a twitter hashtag into an RSS feed that can be fed to a web site and a facebook page. twitter is also very easy to learn - for those not familiar - it is basically texting online with a public address book + a social 'library' cataloguing system (aka hashtag). the main challenge of twitter is being comfortable with thinking 'publicly'.

videos while hard to make seem to have a high impact in terms of online presence.

If you want to put a link on the flyers you could always make a short link at e.g. http://tinyurl.com/
