RESEARCH: "The Aspirin of the 21st Century"

Such has cannabis been dubbed by some researchers, who see in the complex interaction between the human endocannabinoid system and natural and synthetic cannabinoids the opportunity to develop safe broad spectrum drugs for many conditions. The problem with the cannabis plant itself is that, as this article states, it can't be patented. Drug companies are looking for synthetics that can be.

Grey-haired Patricia Tabram, in court last week for possessing 240 grams of cannabis – worth £850 – reflects a growing trend of "buyers' clubs". Those with a medicinal need for the drug are banding together to buy it in bulk, with, one assumes, a discount from the supplier.

Cannabis: Prescribing the miracle weed
by Clare Wilson New Scientist
"I have had patients commit suicide because they said life had no meaning for them any more," says William Notcutt, an anaesthetist at James Paget Hospital in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, on England's east coast. Notcutt specialises in treating patients in severe long-term pain. The causes are varied, ranging from spinal injuries to multiple sclerosis, but most of the patients have one thing in common: existing medicines don't help them.

Medicinal Use of Cannabis
Politics.co.uk
Cannabis is a durable hemp plant. The cannabis plant can be used to produce a number of products including seeds, pulp, and medicine. The pulp is used as fuel and to make paper, the seed is used in foods, and the oil from the seed can be used as a base for paints and varnishes. The blossoms and leaves of the hemp plant produce a sticky resin, which has historically been used in a variety of medicinal functions, and for just as long, for recreational drug use.
