G’day all,

I’ve thought about buying this album, but it would only be a fan collector purchase. I grabbed my on-line copy as soon as it came out, but given my record player is giving me trouble and has sat unused for 3+ years now and a copy of the album is about $100 Australian I’m feeling a bit torn. Right now I’d just be buying it for display purposes. Sort of the same thing if I look at buying the Silent Protest album “featuring Kate” plus others. These things become simple display pieces.

Side Note: Looking for a decent record player option that works within a modern environment. Preferably would love it to just have AirPlay/ChromeCast/MiriCast ability.

I stopped being a collector that just had to buy every version of every release I could get hold on when she reissued all of her albums with completely new covers plus in marbled vinyl plus HoL in two different boxed sets, some of these only available in UK. Getting hold of all of them would have cost a very undecent 2-3000 Euros, so after a quick thought to get one or two of them (but which ones?)

So I‘ve got to live with my luckily won Unicef The Sensual World LP :-)

Hi Uli,

That’s happened to me with different artists over the years. I have to have everything, until they start creating fake everything. When that happens, I usually trim my collection to just the music. If the music is available elsewhere, it often all goes. 

While I enjoyed being cool and having rare this or rare that, I don’t care any longer. I only care about the music.

Doug correctly pointed out the source of the photo. There’s zero resemblance to Current Kate.

It's actually from the back cover of the 12-inch single, though. The front cover is a photo of her drawing a bow string with the string pressed to her lips. She also is wearing the same archer's glove that you see on her hand in the cover for the new B-sides compilation. Though on the back cover of the 12-single, I believe that the glove is not visible, so the new cover is either a somewhat different photo from the same photo session or a different cropping.

Pshaw! Aerial is an excellent album. Though 50 Words isn't really my cup of tea (except for the song with her son), so I can't really comment on it.

David Gilmore hadn't ever released a decent solo album. Not even his Pink Floyd albums, except for maybe The Division Bell, which was okay, I suppose. But then his latest album is actually pretty good. Nothing great, but solid.

I think that it goes without saying that Kate Bush has three truly great albums: TKI, TD, and HoL Every song on each of these albums is great, and each album is genre-defining.

The rest of her repertoire has lots of great songs mixed amongst merely excellent songs, and some only good songs, and a few not-so-good songs. But then again, even Pink Floyd has only four truly great albums. (If you don't count Piper at the Gates of Dawn, which was effectively a different band.)

I don't think that Kate is ever going to release another album, but if it only had one song as good as Snowflake on it, it would be worth it for that alone.

As expected, the quality of the video shot didn't meet Catherine's quality standards. This is why we only ever got half of The Tour of Life video. She should have filmed more nights for both.

P.S. I saw Roger Waters' recent concert film at a theater, and it was awesome. Better than being at the actual concert in many respects.

And also the remastered Live at Pompei film, which was great to see at a theater.

I think there is a pretty simple reason why the DVD was not released. Kate was not satisfied with her apoearance. There were enough catty remarks after the last video she appeared in, King of the Mountain. She is human after all.

Another possibl reason: one of the nights filmed was the one where the Watching You Without Me part went awry ('twas the night I was there.)  If that scene on the other night filmed wasn't up to scratch (to Kate's exacting standards) then that would have probably kiboshed the whole shebang.

I’m with Doug on this. I was thinking about it earlier this year and I think Aerial has become maybe my second favourite KaTe release. At least based on my recent selection options. HoL absolutely, TKI, TD yes yes.. but, when I’m needing to scratch that itch Aerial is on higher rotation then all except HoL.

I find Aerial is a mixed bag of some of her greatest songs, some that would be great if it weren't for those little niggles I have, plus various experiments and mundanities (for Kate.)   As such I rather enjoy the variety (albeit with occasional teeth clenching) so it does tend to be played a lot.

If 50 Words had been released in a parallel world where we just had vinyl, and we had the 45 minutes of Snowflake & Lake Tahoe on side A and Misty & Among Angels on side B, then that would be Kate's equal best ever album [along with The Dreaming, of course. ;) ]

It's certainly very nice to see a lot of familiar names, from back when I first entered the internet back in, oh, 1996. 

I am surprised, though, that the first message about the 'other sides' best of was posted in the second half of November, because the album was out at the end of September!

Fandom isn't what it used to be.

That said, the release is very underwhelming. I recently had the realization that the 'Before the dawn' concerts were probably about Kate finishing her recording career. 
She has teased a few times about recording new material, but somehow I get the feeling that it will never happen. 
Certainly since the 'Remastered' box sets, Kate has become a bit like Kraftwerk, re-releasing old material in various configurations like it's an art project instead of a music career.

I can't say I'm disappointed because I am truly grateful for the extraordinary work she's done between 1978 and those final concerts, but it is a bit unnerving.

Maybe time for our own remixes and mashups. I did a couple of A Coral Room + Among Angels some 10 years or so ago. Subdued the vocals so the lyrics didn't clash all over one another - the remaining instrumentals meshed well enough when pitch adjusted (if you like either song.) One version stretched A Coral Room slightly so they ended at the same time. My opinion, for what it's worth, is that there will be more music from Kate. I have no idea when, or in what format. For example I think there will be some sort of tribute track for Del. But it may take some time to work its way out. It's also in the back of my mind that we may not have seen the last live performances. But maybe that is just wishful thinking. Maybe a tribute to Del could take the form of the stripped back set he favoured. Kate, piano, and little else.
