Hi all,

The Kate Bush Encyclopedia is now almost 10 years old and I feel like it is getting where I want it to be. Over the last few months I have added a lot of new entries and some day it will be a complete reference work on Kate Bush, the way I wanted it to be back in 2014.

I was wondering whether you have used the website and if it made you discover new things, for instance cover versions or other info you didn't know yet. I am also keen to add more information, so any suggestions will be most welcome.

I am especially interested in Kate Bush fanzines that were published over the past four decades. Some only existed for one or two issues, others (like Homeground!) are still going strong. Any info you might have (including front page scans, preferably) are most welcome.

Kind regards,

Marcel Rijs

Marcel,
I'd never visited the encyclopedia before today, and I have to say I'm stunned by it. Both the breadth and the quality of the content are incredible. It's going to impact my reading time elsewhere for weeks/months because I'm obviously now going to have to read every word of it.

Secondly, I owe you an apology. Back in 2019 I offered to pass along my collection of Kate Bush LPs, 45s, and CDs. At that time, the shipping cost was going to be prohibitive, so my plan was to hand-carry as much as possible to my son (who lived in Mainz at the time) and have him arrange some sort of handoff. But before my planned visit in 2020, some little thing called Covid changed everyone's plans for the next couple of years.

By the time I actually did visit him, in September of 2023, he and his wife had moved to Brussels. And his wife, herself an avid Kate fan (at the young age of "only" 44) expressed the desire to inherit my collection. So, when traveling, I loaded up a couple of large suitcases and hauled them with me. They have a very high-quality turntable, which allowed us to geek out for hours playing 45s and various bootlegs.

Once again, I apologize twice to you -- once for never getting back to you, and another for reneging on my offer to pass the collection on to you. Rest assured, however, that they're in the hands of another genuine fan, and not being sold for $3 in some random second-hand record shop.

Thanks again for the amazing Kate Bush Encyclopedia!

-- Steve

G’day Marcel,

That’s a fantastic site. An amazing effort. I'm just popping all over it right now.

Hello Marcel,

This is really good - somehow I've never seen it, so thanks for making me (and probably others) aware.

The only thing I really looked at were the lyrics.

I'm guessing you got the lyrics from gaffa.org because I know to check "Experiment IV" as gaffa.org has missing several lines. And yours does too. When gaffa was being setup years ago I tried to get it updated, but that never happened. Every now and then I ask for this to be corrected, but it doesn't fall on the correct ears.
Anyway... can you correct your "Experiment IV" lyrics, the actual lyrics are at my site:
http://dongrays.com/kate-bush/song/ei.html
or genius.com has them.

Keeping with the lyrics topic, the other thing I noticed were that the pages that have lyrics, it shows the officially released versions and don't mention demo/studio/extended versions of the lyrics which often are different (for example "Babooshka" has 3 sightly different lyrics depending on the piano version, beatbox version, and official release).

Then there are extended versions of tracks which obviously have different lyrics, my favourite being "The BIg Sky" and the various statements of "That cloud looks like..." which are only in the extended release.

I'm not sure how you'd make references to these differences, nor even if it's worth having the variations, but I thought I'd mention it.

But overall, your site is fantastic!

G’day Marcel,

As soon as I read Byan’s email below I went straight to The Dreaming to check the lyrics and I found a mistake there too that has bugged me for decades.

The third chorus has always been interpreted as follows in fan sites, which has become accepted standard:

Coming in with the golden light
In the morning
Coming in with the golden light
With no warning
Coming in with the golden light
We bring in the rigging
Dig, dig, dig, dig away

The issue here is cultural. If you’re not Australian that final line is hard to understand. People outside Australia try to understand what is said and at best they have guessed “Dig, dig, dig, dig away”. That’s NOT what she’s saying. There is a saying here that is used to denote when something is REALLY Australian and that’s “True Blue, Fair Dinkum Aussie”. It’s like saying “American as Apple Pie”. As with everything else we say, the sentence was shortened. You can get away with “True Blue”, or “Fair DInkum Aussie”, or just “Dinkum Aussie”. (Quick aside, if you say just “Fair Dinkum”, it means true or truth)

This leads me to to that final line. She’s saying:

Din, din, din, dinkum Aussie

Now that I’ve explained this. Listen to that chorus and it’s plain as day. Also, makes sense in context of the song.

Hi,

I want to thank everyone who's written about my website, it all helps to make it better.
Thanks to Bryan I noticed (for the first time!) the omission in 'Experiment IV', which I've now fixed.
As for those alternative versions, I agree it's not easy to incorporate all of them. Who knows I might some day if I get a better idea to do this in a good way.

There's one response I'm having a little trouble with:

I've listened, not for the first time I might add, and for the life of me I couldn't make that line sound like 'Din, din, din, dinkum Aussie', basically because I don't hear an 's' in that last word, and it sounds very much like 'Dig, dig, dig, dig away' to me. It always has, to be honest.
This is the first I've ever heard of this!

So can anyone concur or is Graham simply pulling my leg? (To use a fine expression in my second language.)

Kind regards,

Marcel Rijs

Hi Marcel,

I used your website before.  I admire the site.  I know a lot of your time has gone into it.  However, I did prefer the look of old design much more.  I also noticed that many of your dates and details for her TV appearances are incorrect.

Many of your Top of the Pops details had the wrong details or were incorrect.  I’ll just list the Top of the Pops dates here.  These are all of her unique studio appearance dates.  No repeat dates here.

9. Top of the Pops. United Kingdom. February 16, 1978. “Wuthering Heights” (Live Vocals).
10. Top of the Pops. United Kingdom. March 2, 1978. “Wuthering Heights” (Live).
11. Top of the Pops. United Kingdom. March 23, 1978. “Wuthering Heights” (2 Copies) (Live Vocals).
3. Top of the Pops. United Kingdom. March 22, 1979. “Wow”.
1. Top of the Pops. United Kingdom. July 9, 1980. “Babooshka”.
2. Top of the Pops. United Kingdom. August 22, 1985. “Running up That Hill”.
12. Top of the Pops. United Kingdom. March 6, 1986. “Hounds of Love”.
23. Top of the Pops. United Kingdom. November 17, 1994. “And So Is Love”.

Here are some resources I like for Top of the Pops.

I’ll send the rest of the dates I have for Kate Bush TV song appearances separately in this thread.
