I have dissected all of the past winners of ArtPrize to expose the winning formula. These are the top 10 things that the top 10 winners hold in common from 2009 through 2011. The ability of an artist to excel in most of these categories will determine their success.

The work should...
1. Be located in a high traffic venue
2. Be big
3. Create a viscerally impelling first impression
4. Compel the audience to engage with it for an extended period of time.
5. Be family friendly
6. Be conceptually accessible (deal with fairly straight forward ideas such as Beauty, Playfulness, History, Religion, Fantasy, etc.)
7. Require enormous effort in its creation.
8. demonstrate mastery of a specialized skill.
9. Be out outdoors
10. Use materials that consist of common, every-day things.

From 162 venues hosting 1,517  artist entries I was able to visit just 9 venues and use my formula to achieve a 70% success rate for my top 10 making it into the top 25. Does that prove the formula is legit?

None of the past winners were outdoors. Why do you have that factored into your formula?

No wonder the Parthenon continues to get so many votes!  (-:

(Good list.)

Artprizer has correctly pointed out that most of the top 3 past winners were indoors. In fact only 2 of the 9 past top 3 winners have been outdoors. However, 21 of the past 30 top 10 winners have been outdoors. So being outdoors will help you get in the top ten but not really in the top 3. That's why it's at the bottom of the list. Thanks for keeping me honest Artprizer.
