I believe that the depiction of Hussein was a tool for provocation, which succeeded in its mission. Gilmore has the right to say what he wants displayed on his property, and his personal choice to remove the piece was just that, his personal choice. Singh misled him from the beginning by deliberately omitting the controversial contents of his piece in his ArtPrize profile. Placing the work in the trash became a statement in itself; putting it elsewhere, where no one would see Gilmore’s discord, would have watered down, if not eliminated, the power of his retort. Also important here is the fact that the action became a mini-drama that received television coverage that ultimately promoted ArtPrize.
