I took a picture of AP art at Frederik Meijer Gardens and was told by security, no photographs of AP art was allowed. I was floored. I asked for a reason why it wasn't permitted, and he said it was requested by the artist for copyright reasons. I said that was ridiculous, and he then directed me to the manager. I spoke with the manager and he said, "We don't allow any photographs of works that we don't own because we see copies on the internet for sale all the time, and also, the artist requested we not allow any pictures of their works." He also said, It was confusing to our patrons who come here year round for us to allow photos for the 2 and 1/2 weeks of AP and not all year." Since I have no pictures and not all art had cards by their works for what ever reason, I no longer remember what pieces I liked or wanted to vote for. I see many people take pics of the art and artist tags to remember what they liked. In this case, if indeed the artist really requested "No Pictures," then, I think they hurt themselves. This to me, is astounding that the artist who are priviliged to show their works at FMG feel above the other venue artist, by not allowing pictures. Art is about sharing and making people aware and strike up conversations and to educate. Not everyone has the luxury to be able to come to our great city and enjoy what AP has implemented. By us sharing pictures of the art works and standing in the photo by the art, is a way of enticing our family and friends, to please try to come to Grand Rapids and checkout ArtPrize to see what all the excitement is about.
I wonder how the other venue artist feel about FMG's stand? What if all the artist said, we don't want pictures taken of our works?

Interesting, it seems that year by year some of the different venues are exerting more control over their part of ArtPrize.    We've always seen some degree of it whether it was churches wanting only religious themed artwork or the art institutions heavily curating their pieces or this year with the B.O.B. taking it upon themselves to trash an artist's work on their own.  I guess that the Gardens want to keep running the venue during AP as much like they normally do as possible.  Did they make a distinction between the permanent artists there and the AP artists not wanting pics taken?  I wouldn't think that the AP artists would be so controlling...none of the other artists in other AP venues are that way.  Maybe they should segregate the AP artists from their non-AP artists a bit more.

The mgr. I spoke to never made a distinction, but implied that it was AP artist, regardless the AP artist obviously agreed to whatever rules that FMG set forth and in my opinion, makes them just as culpable. I agree, they should segregate the AP artists from their non-AP artists.
Thanks...

Art Prize is for the people. Part of that is the participation of the people is through photography. This is a policy that doesn't allow the people to participate with the art. Perhaps FMG needs to loosen the rules for the ArtPrize experience.

I've been a member at FMG for a number of years. It has always been a very hands-off place... a place where art is being preserved for its historical value. This idea rubs off onto everything they do. For example, they built a farm area for children. But if you visit it with your child, you end up getting scolded by docents "don't touch the art!". Even the children's area, at least half of the displays are hands off. I've always thought Artprize and MFG were a bad match. The works in art prize are not yet of historical significance and the venue is too far removed from downtown.
