GHEEBAH, BUHTAAN & NAMEEMAH

The Muslim has to guard his tongue and avoid things that have been forbidden.
Among these forbidden things which people take often lightly are *GHEEBAH (backbiting),
*BUHTAAN (slander)
*NAMEEMAH (malicious gossip).

Gheebah or backbiting means speaking about a Muslim in his absence and saying things that he would not like to have spread around or mentioned.

Buhtaan or slander means saying things about a Muslim that are not true, or in other words telling lies about him.

Nameemah or malicious gossip means telling one person what another said in order to cause trouble between them.

There is a great deal of evidence to show that these actions are HARAAM. It will suffice for us to mention just a few of them in order to demonstrate that they are haraam.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“neither backbite one another. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his dead brother? You would hate it (so hate backbiting). And fear Allaah. Verily, Allaah is the One Who forgives and accepts repentance, Most Merciful”
[al-Hujuraat 49:12]

It was narrated from Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله ﺗﻌﺎﻟﯽٰعنه  ) that the Messenger of Allaah صلى الله عليه وسلم  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said:
“Do you know what gheebah (backbiting) is?” They said, “Allaah and His Messenger know best.” He said, “Saying something about your brother that he dislikes.” It was said, “What if what I say about my brother is true?” He said, “If what you say is true then you have backbitten about him, and if it is not true, then you have slandered him.”

Reflecting over death
Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned:

The life of this world is temporary and will soon come to an end. While there exists a difference of opinion regarding everything in life, there exists no difference of opinion regarding the certainty of death.

Despite us believing in the inevitability and certainty of death, yet we still don’t find time to work and strive for the eternal life. We find the time to earn our livelihood but don’t find any time to engage in zikr.

The separation of India and Pakistan (where people were forced to leave India and settle in Pakistan leaving behind all their properties and wealth) made it easy for us to realize that at the time of death nothing will accompany a person when he leaves this world.

The Masha’ikh have written in regards to hajj that the entire scene of hajj is one that depicts the spectacle of death. A person removes his normal clothing and replaces it with two simple pieces of cloth.

People accompany the person leaving for hajj to the station or to Bombay in order to see him off and thereafter return to their homes. People departing for hajj have to leave all their wealth, properties etc. behind.

Hazrat Sheikh (rahimahullah) then mentioned, “When the clock sounds, an announcement is actually being made: “O negligent person, every time the needle of the clock goes around, it has decreased a portion of your life.” (Suhbate Ba Awliyaa’ page.152)

This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Abu Huraira Radi Allahu Anhu  but with this variation of wording that in the hadith transmitted on the authority of Abu Bakr Radi Allahu Anhu , there is an addition of these words: "There is a prayer among prayers ('Asr) and one who misses it is as if his family and property have been ruined." (Muslim - Book 41, Hadith 6894

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (Radi Allahu Anhuma) narrates that the beloved Prophet (SallAllahu Alayhi wa Sallam) told them:

"One of the slaves of Allah said:

يا رب لك الحمد كما ينبغي لجلال وجهك ولعظيم سلطانك
Ya Rabb! Lakal-hamdu kama yambagi li-jalali Wajhika wa li 'azeema sultanika

The angels were uncertain and did not know how to write (the reward of) this down, so they ascended to heaven and said: 'O our Lord, Your slave has said a word that we do not know how to write (its reward) down.' Allah said - and He knows best what His slave said - 'What did My slave say?' They said: 'O Lord, he said "Ya Rabb! Lakal-hamdu kama yanbagi li-jalali Wajhika wa li'azeema sultanika" Allah said to them: 'Write it down as My slave said it, until he meets Me and I shall reward him for it.'" [Sunan Ibn Majah, Vol. 2, Page 1249, Hadith 3801]

Our  رســــول اللـــه صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ said:Shall I not tell you who will be forbidden from the Fire. It will be forbidden for every gentle, soft-hearted & kind person. (Tirmidhi)

If you think its embarrassing for others to know about your sins in this life, imagine how it will be on the Day of Judgement.

Repent now! أستغفر الله
