Firstly can I congratulate you guys on a great product.

I have been asked to make our crappy village website a lot more
community driven with a budget close to zero http://home.vannas.net/tvaraback/
..yes a tall order but with open source it can be done. I was looking
at Joomla until I came across lovdbyless and fell in love.

Just a couple of questions..
Can lovdbyless put people in groups allowing for example a fishing
group etc....if not can it be easily done via this 'Ruby' framework by
someone like me who has no programming or Ruby knowledge but has
worked in a IT support background.

And where did you get the idea for the name Lovd By Less :)

Kind Regards

The good news first. Yes, you can do all of that and more with Ruby and Lovd. See an example (http://www.teacherswithoutborders.com/). Most of the code (the ruby/rails part) you can see on github. That would give you an idea of who it works.

The bad news. You will have to take a look at Ruby and Rails, but it won't be pain. You can start with the Guides (guides.rubyonrails.org/). And read some good ruby books like (http://www.manning.com/black2/ or http://apress.com/book/view/9781430223634). They pretty nice, you gonna lov it. Nothing is for free, not even Ruby. You got to spend some time with it. ;)

Get to understand models and how to associate them. After that you will look at what you have to do and all the rest  will come to your mind. Like:
- there are users => User model
- there are groups => Group model
- link both together by another model like.......like membership
- managers/officers for groups
- officer control join request by users
- ....
Pretty easy.

Cheers,
Chris

Thanks Chris, your info was really helpful.
I've ordered the aspress book you suggested since it seems to be aimed
at at a non-programmer.
I'm not sure what the files are at the github but I'm sure that will
become clear once I've gone through the pain of learning a new
skill...but like you say nothin is free :)

Also thanks for the model tips which is chinese to me at the moment
but that also hopefully will make sense once I've read the book.

Kind Regards

Zak

The name is Lovd, which was created by my company, Less Everything. So
Lovd By Less is pretty straight forward in that context. But we also
chose that name because of the irony of having a social network, where
one of the main purposes is to make friends and connect with people,
named for the opposite of this.

cheers,
steve

Steve, your company name reminds me of an ubergeek of yesteryear I
never met but had immense respect for...

David Small I think was his name... Gadgets By Small had this hardware
software hack that let you run Mac OS on cheaper Atari ST machines
faster than expensive Macs running same CPU. Literally.
