ACM members and officers in particular,
I know that several of you have considered trying to get a group to go
to an ACM conference. Well, SC2010 is about as big as they get. It
isn't in my field but from all that I have heard it is a great one to
attend.
This volunteer option could be the best ticket there. Not only would
you get some/most of the expenses covered and the experience but you
would be able to get exposure to one research area - and get a feel for
what conferences are like. It would also bring attention to our
university and to the ACM chapter.
I didn't look if the applications are individual or if you can apply as
a group but if the latter is available that gives you even more say.
Notice that the deadline though not soon is in August so this is
something that you (officers?) will have to try to work on during the
summer months - via email etc.
And for some from the N.O. area that shall rename nameless, it gives an
excuse to go "home" without having to go home since you will be occupied
by working at the conference. :-)
Have a great summer!
-Christian

Calling for Student Volunteers
Applications now being accepted deadline to apply is Sunday, August
27. Student Volunteer application forms are available at the SC010
Submissions site. <
http://submissions.supercomputing.org/>
Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply as
volunteers to help with the administration of the conference. In
exchange, students will receive complimentary conference registration,
housing (for out-of-town volunteers) and some meals. In addition,
limited support for transportation expenses (such as airfare) is
available for students from groups that traditionally have been
underrepresented in HPC, such as African-Americans, Hispanics, Native
Americans, Alaska Natives, Native Hawaiians, Pacific Islanders, the
physically challenged, and women.
Volunteers will be expected to be available for a total of 4-5 hours of
work per day during the week of the conference. No special skills or
experience are necessary for most volunteer positions; however, some
familiarity with computing platforms, audio/visual equipment, or office
equipment can be helpful.
Student volunteers will have the opportunity to learn about and discuss
the latest high performance computing and networking technologies and
meet leading researchers from around the world while contributing to the
success of SC10.
Student Volunteer applications are due Sunday, August 27, 2010.
Successful applications will be notified of their acceptance by
September 30, 2010.
