FYI.  If anyone is interested - or knows of others interested in this competition.  I believe someone from Tech entered last year but I can't recall whom and what they thought about it in the end.  (Maybe if more jumped on it we could get some good feedback on its worth for future students!)

Cheers from Germany,
Christian

Dear educator,

You are receiving this email because one or more of your students registered for last year's IBM Master the Mainframe Contest.  Thank you for encouraging your students to participate!  In case you weren't already aware, here's a brief announcement for this year's contest, which begins at noon EST on Monday, October 3:

************
Registration is now open for the 2011 IBM Master the Mainframe Contest, with over $35,000 in prizes up for grabs!  The major focus of the contest is to introduce students to an area of the computer field that they may not have had much experience with, and which is currently in a long-term hiring phase.  If you think your students might be interested in checking it out (IBM designed the contest to be NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY), please forward this announcement to them.

Contest homepage: http://ibm.com/university/contest

Master the
      Mainframe 2011

Students can access the simple registration form from that page.  We also put a link to a printable PDF Flyer on the homepage to help promote the contest to your students, and they'll find a lively community on our official contest Facebook page.

The contest begins on Monday, October 3, and allows students to log into a mainframe system from their home computers or computer labs to complete increasingly difficult technical challenges for bigger and bigger prizes (T-shirts, pre-paid debit cards, Samsung Galaxy tablets, trips).  If you have any questions about the contest, you can reach the IBM Academic Initiative System z program at zsk...@us.ibm.com.  The contest runs through December 28.

Students who complete Part 2 of the contest will be invited to put their resumes into the Student Opportunity System, a recruiting tool for enterprise systems employers.  We'll be directing interested recruiters to link up with students through that system, and also for students to use their mainframe skills to help them apply for the jobs on our new System z Job Board at systemzjobs.com.

Good luck to all students who participate!

************

Best regards,

Mike Todd

Hi Dr.Duncan,

I remember i entered this competition in 2009 $ 2010. It is a nice way of learning something new if you have time. The competition is divided into different levels. and each level has different tasks that are designed to teach the basics of mainframe computing. IBM has good resources available to use as reference during the competition. I would encourage people to try this. You get to learn while at the same time win great prizes. If you just complete level 1, they have free Ibm tshirts :).

Thanks,
Sandeep

Dillon Welch did this last year. We already had it planned to talk about at our meeting tonight. Thanks for the reminder.
