Message From The President
The new LCA Board of Directors has wasted no time getting started on the 2022-23 year. Seven members (the 4 officers and area reps for Greater New Orleans, Baton Rouge/East Central, and Lafayette/South Central Louisiana) were elected at the membership meeting on Sunday, September 4th. Because no one from North Louisiana or the Southwest region was present at the meeting, I nominated and the Board approved the appointment of Jennie MacGregor as Lake Charles/Southwest Regional Rep. and Matthew Moore as North Regional Rep. at our first Board meeting. That meeting was held via Zoom on Thursday 9/22 and all 9 of our enthusiastic members attended.
In addition to formally appointing the last 2 area reps, the Board discussed potential sites for the 2022 Kickoff Scholastic; collegiate chess throughout the state; potential dates for the Louisiana Pro-Am and Paul Morphy tournaments; creation of a coaches roster for the website; an audit of the treasury for the several terms for which no Treasury Report was submitted to the members (those ending 8/2018, 8/2019, 11/2021 and 9/2022); the 2022-23 US Chess Title 1 School Support Program; and the appointment of the Scholastic Committee, which Scholastic Coordinator Isabella Runge will chair. (Any parent or coach interested in representing their region on the Scholastic Committee should let us know. This Committee is key to organizing and coordinating scholastic events throughout Louisiana.)
The main focus of the first Board Meeting, however, was onboarding and training the members on the LCA’s role and responsibilities as the Louisiana chapter of the US Chess Federation and the duties of those serving on the LCA Board. For that, we were joined by US Chess Executive Board Member & Immediate Past President Mike Hoffpauir. The Thibodaux native provided invaluable insights and information in his 45 minute presentation and answered our many questions. He also confirmed that the Executive Board will hold its Spring 2023 meeting in New Orleans to explore the Morial Convention Center and the hotel and event space in the Convention Center area as potential venues for the US Open & Annual Meeting and for future national scholastic events. We are excited at the prospect of our state hosting these prestigious and popular events.
Finally, we are thrilled that Steve D’Aquin, who modernized and overhauled our website in 2020 and strives to keep chess communications open and frequent, will continue to serve as our website & social media co-ordinator this year. Area reps provide him with monthly updates, but all clubs and members can also contact him directly at louisia...@gmail.com with club info, tournament announcements & results, and chess community news.
We’re off to a strong start and look forward to an active year of growing Louisiana chess.
