Is the plug with the square hole an overflow to determine the oil level for the differential?  If it isn't the overflow how much oil goes into the diff?  And what's the function of this plug?

Thanks,
Skiff

That's how it works on the majority of Mk VIs with the Ford Popular axle.  One plug at the bottom to drain it and one on the side to fill it.  I use a container with a bendy tube, fill until the oil reaches the bottom of the tapped hole and put the plug back in.

Perhaps an Eleven owner with the de Dion arrangement could confirm this.

That's how the BMC pumpkin works. Fill it until it leaks out and makes a mess. The Lotus casting was based on the Spridget internals.

It is a std Ford feature – the filler plug is the level indicator same with their gearboxes. I should imagine that  most manufacturers will have the same approach to oil level indication.

Lotus Seven MK7 #409, originally bought from Lotus and raced for a single season by Brian Hart, has found a new owner who will research and restore the car in the near future. The story will unfold on SimpleSevens.

Please see the current entry here: http://www.simplesevens.org/0409/0409a.htm and there you will also find links to the original posting with numerous photos of the project as first documented by SimpleSevens.

Of particular interest at the moment would be detail photos of a Burman steering box installation for us to examine so we know where to look for evidence of such an installation on #409. (The car came to light with a rack and pinion set-up similar to later S1 Sevens).

Thank you for any assistance!

Cheers,
John Donohoe
