Junior Avery Barnes (High Springs, Fla.) was 3-for-3 with a single, double and homer and scored three times and sophomore Cole Figueroa (Tallahassee, Fla.) drove in two runs as the Gators ended a five-game slide. The contest was shortened to seven innings because of the league's travel policy.

The Gators got off to a quick start with two runs in the first inning against sophomore Steve Crnkovich (4-3). Barnes drew a leadoff walk and scored on sophomore Matt den Dekker's (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) triple down the right-field line. Figueroa followed with his sixth sacrifice fly of the season to left for a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Tennessee answered with a run of its own on a bases-loaded infield hit by sophomore Jeff Lockwood to cut the deficit in half. The Vols used consecutive two-out singles off Keating by sophomore Yan Gomes, senior Shawn Griffin and freshman Josh Liles to fill the sacks. Lockwood hit a shot off the pitcher's leg to drive in Gomes but Keating worked out of further trouble by having freshman P.J. Polk's grounder force Lockwood at second.

Florida extended its lead to 4-1 in the third courtesy of an RBI double by Figueroa and a wild pitch by junior Ty'Relle Harris. Barnes had led off with a single up the middle, advanced to second on a wild pitch and taken third on a groundout by den Dekker. Figueroa's ninth two-bagger ended the afternoon for Crnkovich (2.1 IP, 5 H, 4 R). Junior Aaron Everett plunked freshman Josh Adams (Jacksonville, Fla.) and the Gators were able to have runners on second and third after a flyout by senior Dustin Bamberg (Winter Haven, Fla.) and a Vol throwing error on the relay throw. As Everett was pitching to senior Jon Townsend (London, Ky.), he was injured and had to leave the game. On ball four to Townsend, Harris uncorked an errant pitch that enabled Figueroa to come across with the fourth run.

Griffin began the home part of the stanza with his fifth homer to close the gap to 4-2. Back-to-back one-out singles by Lockwood and Polk put the Vols in business, only to have Keating work out of the jam by having junior Cody Brown line into an inning-ending double play.

Barnes blasted his second homer of the campaign with two down in the fourth to help the visitors re-claim a three-run lead. Three of his five career round-trippers have come against Tennessee. Bamberg later lofted a sac fly to center in the fifth, bringing in Figueroa, to increase UF's lead to 6-2.

After yielding a leadoff single to Gomes in the fifth, Keating (4.0 IP, 10 H, 2 R) was replaced by sophomore Tony Davis (Cooper City, Fla.). The southpaw surrendered a single to the lone batter he faced, Griffin, before junior Stephen Locke (Tampa, Fla.) was summoned from the pen. The lefty issued a walk to Liles to load the bases with none out and had Lockwood line into a 4-6-3 inning-ending triple play. It was the second time Florida turned a triple play this season.

UF will resume action on Tuesday night by hosting North Florida (17-13/8-9 Atlantic Sun) at 6:30 p.m. in the opener of a two-game set at McKethan Stadium. The Opreys posted an 11-10 win in 10 innings last Wednesday.

Columbia, who has now played three consecutive games that have gone beyond nine innings, improved to 12-15 overall and 8-3 in the Ancient Eight, tied with Harvard for first place and a half-game in front of Penn (8-4), who took 2-of-3 against Princeton on Friday and Saturday.

After Yale left the bases loaded in the 10th and stranded two more in the 12th, Columbia took advantage in the top of the 13th to break up a 2-2 tie. Liam McGill and Chandler Bengtson both beat defensive shifts, with McGill singling through the right side and Bengtson dropping a bunt down the third base line to set the table for Nicoloff.

Nicoloff broke the deadlock with his two-run triple to the gap in left-center to give the Lions a two-run cushion. After a walk, Porter drove in another run with a double down the leftfield line and Jack Chernow followed with a sac fly to score pinch-runner Griffin Williams. Julian Bury and Joe Engel each posted RBI singles, putting Columbia on top by six.

The Bulldogs took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Simon Whiteman led the game off with a triple and scored on a base-hit from Tim DeGraw. Columbia knotted things up in the fifth on a pair of infield singles. Chernow reached with one out and moved to third after a wild pitch and groundout to the right side. Engel posted another single to the pitcher to make it 1-1.

The Lions held that margin until the bottom of the ninth. A leadoff single and sacrifice bunt pushed the tying run into scoring position. Dai Dai Otaka put runners on the corners after a knock and the Bulldogs dropped down a successful safety squeeze and force extras.

DeGraw and Griffin Dey each had two hits for Yale. Rohan Handa (2-3) was responsible for the leadoff batters reaching in the 13th and was charged with the loss. He wored 4.1 innings, allowing two runs with five strikeouts. Starter Scott Politz fanned five and scattered nine hits and two runs over eight solid frames.

Columbia led 2-0 after plating a pair in the second inning. Porter registered a single to bring in Nicoloff from second after he doubled to start things off. With Porter on second after an error on the throw to the plate during his hit, two fly balls pushed the senior home for the second run of the ballgame.

Yale's lone baserunner the first time through the order was erased by a double play, but the Bulldogs broke through in the fourth. Simon Whiteman dropped down a bunt for a leadoff single and stole second. Just like the Lions in the second, two fly balls brought in a run to cut the deficit in half. Jake Gehri kept the inning alive with a double to left-center and came around on Brian Ronai's base-hit.

The Lions were held without a hit from the fifth to the eighth inning and Yale knocked on the door multiple times. However, Columbia's relievers relied on strong defense from the infield to wiggle out of trouble.

In the sixth, the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out before Jordan Chriss induced a 5-4-3 double play to keep things deadlocked. Yale threatened again in the seventh, using a walk and double to put runners on second and third with one out. This time, Tim Post came through getting the next batter to hit a grounder to Nicoloff, who threw home and Josh Solomon applied the tag, for the second out. Post retired the side on a fly out to leave two more stranded.

Columbia's third double play of the ballgame came in the eighth and Post froze Ronai for out three. Both teams each had opportunities in the ninth, stranding two runners apiece before Porter's heroics in the 10th.

Bengtson pulled a single to right with two outs to keep the inning alive and moved to second on a wild pitch. After Nicoloff drew a walk, Porter took an 0-2 pitch to the opposite field in right to score Bengtson. The bottom of the inning was drama-free with Jimmy Smiley turning the Bulldogs away in order.

Smiley allowed a walk and hit batter in his two innings of relief, picking up the win to go to 2-0 on the year. Post made his first appearance since March 9 at Cal Poly, tossing 2.0 scoreless innings.

Ben Gibbs (2-1) took the decision, allowing the one run on three hits and three strikeouts in three innings of relief. Kumar Nambiar fanned seven in seven strong innings. Gehri was the only Yale hitter with multiple hits.

What happened: The Tigers pounded out 18 runs to spoil the home opener for the Indians. The 18 hits were the most by an opponent at Progressive Field since the Tigers had 20 hits in a 12-1 win on Sept. 1, 2014.

Multi-hit Miggy: Miguel Cabrera hit singles in the first, third innings and fourth innings and finished 3-for-5. He now has 388 multi-hit games with the Tigers, tying him with Willie Horton for 12th most in club history.

Say what?: Cabrera stole third base in the fourth inning. It was his 38th career stolen base. Cabrera had one stolen base in 2014. It also came against the Indians, on July 18 in a 9-3 loss in Detroit.

Triple threats: Ian Kinsler tripled to bring in a run in the seventh inning. The Tigers have hit a triple each of their first four games to start the season for the first time since at least 1914.

Oh, that bullpen: Al Alburquerque didn't allow a hit in two-thirds of an inning. Blaine Hardy allowed one hit, one walk and one run over two innings with two strikeouts. Joba Chamberlain allowed two hits and had two strikeouts in two-thirds of an inning. Joakim Soria came in with two on and two out in the ninth and got Michael Bourn to strike out looking to end the game. Soria earned his first save.

Second inning: The Tigers opened the scoring after a botched play in the outfield. With two outs and one on, Jose Iglesias hit a pop up to right. It should have been caught by Indians shortstop Jose Ramirez, but it bounced off his glove and then off left fielder Michael Brantley. Iglesias was credited with a hit and Anthony Gose followed with an RBI single to right.
