For those of you who hated the ending. I hope this helps.
The Lost series like all series worth remembering have two messages,
the face message is the story told at face value, the other is the
interpretation of that story to you or all people in our modern day.
Lost drew you in because the messages in the story refer to what was
going on in our modern day life. Some of the themes (but not all) are
terrorism, religious influence on society, fear of life and death.
Airplane disasters or the fear of them were now a profound part of the
U.S psyche. Lost hooked all of us in with the Airplane disaster but
not frivolously. I believe this is not just vital to the story line
but fits awesomely with the theme of this show.
Please go back and review the following scenes to quickly get a
picture into what the architects are trying to convey to you with this
series. There are more scenes, but I believe that these offer more
bang for your buck.
1. Watch the scene near the end of Season 5 where Ben has a
conversation with the (J. Locke -Smoke Monster), at the end of that
conversation Lock ask Ben to kill Jacob. This scene was one of the
most eye opening for me.
2. Someone mentioned this already, but watch the scene at the
beginning of season 6 where Faraday has a conversation with his
mother. She is frightened that he is becoming enlightened and ask him
to let it alone.
3. Watch the scene in the finale again where Jack discovers his
mortality and has a conversation with his father. Look behind Jack as
he stands over his coffin, pay close attention to what you see. There
is a stain colored glass, with all the major religions symbolized in
the glass. Notice that one of the symbols is the ship wheel, it is
placed equally or on the same level as all the other religions. When
Jack ask his father if it is time for him to leave, his father
corrects him and says “No, we are not going anywhere, We are just
going to move on”. (Earlier Outside, Kate tells Jack that it is time
for them to leave). Jack says, “Move onto where”. Christian says,
“Lets go and find out.”

In what some consider to be a church, where all the Lost characters
are, Christian walks to the back of the room and opens the double
doors, notice that none of the other characters follow him. Christian
opens the door and the light starts to pour in from all sides getting
brighter and brighter. THE END. Notice that the characters did not
go anywhere they just got enlightened or illuminated.

I love this part because this is where the author allows you to bring
your faith into the equation. Some people mentioned Purgatory, that
is what came up in your head because that is what was instilled in
you. I believe that your religious interpretation to the last scenes
is important to the effect the author are trying to have on your
psyche.

I hope this post has Illuminated you.
