The film begins with a close-up of the inscription above the stage in the ballroom of the Blackpool Tower: "Bid me discourse, I will enchant thine ear", from the poem Venus and Adonis by William Shakespeare. As the camera pans around the ballroom giving a view of the dancers, a voice-over explains that in Japan, ballroom dancing is treated with suspicion.
Successful salaryman Shohei Sugiyama (Kōji Yakusho) owns a house in the suburbs, a devoted wife, Masako (Hideko Hara), and a teenage daughter, Chikage (Ayano Nakamura), and works as an accountant for a firm in Tokyo. Despite these external signs of success, however, Sugiyama begins to feel as if his life has lost direction and meaning and falls into depression.
One night, while coming home on the Seibu Ikebukuro Line, he spots a beautiful woman with a melancholic expression looking out from the window of a dance studio: Mai Kishikawa (Tamiyo Kusakari), a well-known figure on the Western ballroom dance circuit. Becoming infatuated with her, he decides to take lessons in order to get to know her better.
Later, after being rebuffed by Mai, Sugiyama discovers to his surprise that his passion for ballroom dance has survived her rejection. Indeed, dance, rather than Mai, has given Sugiyama the meaning in life that he was looking for.
Masako, noticing his odd behavior, believes he is having an affair, prompting her to hire a private detective to follow him. Meanwhile, along with his classmates, Sugiyama enters an amateur competition, only to find out that his wife, having finally learned the truth from the detective (who has now become a devoted fan of ballroom dancing), is in the audience. Surprised by this, he stumbles and nearly knocks his dance partner to the floor. Though he successfully catches her, he accidentally rips the skirt of her dress off. Both leave the contest. Sugiyama later learns that Aoki was disqualified. When Aoki is ridiculed at work after his colleagues read of his failure in the newspaper, Sugiyama stands up and tells them not to mock something they don't understand.
Shall We Dance? was released on January 27, 1996, in Japan, where it was distributed by Toho.[1] It was released in the United States by Miramax.[1] The Miramax version was cut to 118 minutes and released on July 4, 1997.[1]
In Japan, it earned a distribution income (rentals) of 1.6 billion in 1996, making it the second top-grossing Japanese film of the year, after Godzilla vs. Destoroyah.[2] Shall We Dance? grossed a total Japanese box office revenue of 2.72 billion[3] ($25 million).[4]
Despite claiming unprecedented success in box office and critical acclaim, the movie did not represent Japan in the Academy Awards - it went to Gakko II, which ended up failing to secure nomination.
At the Japanese Academy Awards it won 14 awards: Best Film, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Director, Best Editing, Best Lighting, Best Music Score, Best Screenplay, Best Sound, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, and Newcomer of the Year.
Shall We Dance? was remade in English by Miramax in 2004 as Shall We Dance?,[1] starring Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez in the Yakusho and Kusakari roles respectively.[1] The 2004 remake itself inspired another foreign remake. In 2006, an Egyptian film titled Let's Dance (Egyptian Arabic: ما تيجي نرقص, romanized: Mah teegy nor'os) was released, starring Yousra in Richard Gere's role.

John Clark is a lawyer with a charming wife, Beverly, and a loving family, who nevertheless feels that something is missing as he makes his way every day through the city. Each evening on his commute home through Chicago, John sees a beautiful woman staring with a lost expression through the window of a dance studio. Haunted by her gaze, John impulsively jumps off the train one night, and signs up for ballroom dancing lessons, hoping to meet her.
At first, it seems like a mistake. His teacher turns out not to be the woman in the window, Paulina, but the studio's older namesake, Miss Mitzi, and John proves to be just as clumsy as his equally clueless classmates Chic and Vern on the dance-floor. Even worse, when he does meet Paulina, she icily tells John she hopes he has come to the studio to seriously study dance and not to look for a date. But, as his lessons continue, John falls in love with dancing. Keeping his new obsession from his family and co-workers, John feverishly trains for Chicago's biggest dance competition. His friendship with Paulina blossoms, as his enthusiasm rekindles her own lost passion for dance. But the more time John spends away from home, the more his wife Beverly becomes suspicious. She hires a private investigator to find out what John is doing, but when she finds out the truth, she chooses to discontinue the investigation and not invade her husband's privacy.
John is partnered with Bobbie for the competition, although his friend Link steps in to do the Latin dances. Link and Bobbie do well in the Latin dances, and while John and Bobbie's waltz goes well, John sees his wife and daughter in the crowd during the quickstep, and is distracted by trying to find them. He and Bobbie fall and are disqualified, and John and Beverly argue in the parking garage. John quits dancing, to everyone's dismay.
Paulina, having been inspired by John to take up competing again, is leaving to go to Europe, and is having a going-away party at the dance studio. She sends John an invitation, but he is not convinced to go until his wife leaves out a pair of dancing shoes that she bought him. He goes and meets Beverly at work, convinces her that while he loves dancing, he still loves her just as much, and he teaches her to dance. They go to the party, and John and Paulina have one last dance before she leaves.
The end scene shows everyone afterwards: Link and Bobbie are now together; Chic, who was actually gay, dances at a club with his partner; Miss Mitzi finds a new partner, and they are happy together; John and Beverly are happier than before and dance in the kitchen; Vern, newly married to his fiance, dances with her at their wedding; the private investigator that Beverly hired, Devine, starts up dance lessons; and Paulina, with a new partner, competes at the Blackpool Dance Festival, the competition that she had lost the year before.

The term "spouse" is defined as husband or wife of a full-time faculty member having the same domicile as that faculty member; the term "dependent child" is defined as one meeting the U.S. Internal Revenue Support Test.
The privilege of tuition remission does not apply to application, registration, laboratory, graduation or student activity fees, nor for private instruction in music, fine arts, dance or similar activities.
Identification Card - The Registrar will provide an "Emeritus" photo identification card entitling the emeritus faculty member or administrator access to University facilities as described in paragraph 11.2 of the Faculty Policy Manual.
Emeritus status may be conferred by the Board of Regents of the University in recognition of outstanding service over a period of years. It is not automatically assigned to a faculty member upon retirement regardless of length of service.
Persons about to retire may be recommended for emeritus status by their department chair, academic dean, the Provost, or a group of colleagues. A recommendation for emeritus status will be reviewed and endorsed in the same manner as tenure and promotion recommendations.
