Hi, I'm new to UAV and new to DIY. I live in OC and would like to
meet with people with the same interests: Aerial photography and FPV.
I'm flying on a hexa frame and APM 2 board with a Gopro HD 2 camera.
Always looking to learn more and have some fun. Is there anyone out
there?

I am close to LAX and also into Aerial Photography and FPV.

Hey David,

I have been in the hobby for about 3 years now and loved every second. FPV has been the most challenging but it is the move rewarding too. It would be nice to meet up here close to Los Angeles and at minimum, share ideas and shoot the .... :)

Maybe we should think about establishing a common meeting place. I recently joined the Peninsula Silent Flyers that meets once a month and have a few guys in to multirotor copters. They also have a good flying field however they are not into FPV at the moment, I believe this will so change.

If not the club, then a local park is good also.

I live in the OC in Tustin and I fly at several local locations. I've
got a quad and a hexa, both purchased as RTF models from Udrones and
Jdrones, but my current favorite platform is an xAircraft V8 multi-
rotor with the DJI Wookong WKM stabilization system. It also uses two-
way telemetry on the 900 mHz band for flying via laptop or viewing
live flight data, and I’m also doing fpv with it using a GoPro Hero2
transmitting with an 800mw 1.2 gHz video tx. Very stable little
aircraft! I also do quite a bit of fpv flying with various planes
(EZstar, funjet, Zephyr, etc) but I’m just starting with autopilot and
things like “return to home” and could use some help and input. I’m
also working with longer range fpv (3 – 5+ miles) using a Dragonlink
set-up. I’d love to meet up with others, but don’t want to drive too
far because it cuts into my flying time! I’m generally only able to
play on weekends.

Hi Jack - We met briefly a couple months ago when I came out to your home field with my fpv tricopter (KK board) and Udrones quad (RTF Arducopter). You helped me with the Arducopter settings and it definitely flew a lot better after that. You were also the one who turned me on to the xAircraft frame and I bought a couple of them shortly after that. One is an RTF V8 with the full DJI stabilization set-up from FPVhobby that I really LOVE, and the other one is a stock 650 quad from CNC that I still haven't put together. The drive out to Whittier from Tustin was a little bit too long to get me hooked, but I'd definitely like to get back together again with you sometime soon! Thanks again for the Arducopter help!

I live in OC, Westminster, not far from Tustin at all. I hear there
is a field in Orange next to Irvine Lake where flyers go. There are
also other great spots especially for FPV with waterfalls and great
scenery all nearby. I'm very new to all of this, but I'm loving every
bit of it. Would love to start a group here in OC, much closer than
LA, there's gotta be some more people here who share similar
interests. In any case, maybe we can meet. I'd like to see your
setups and learn more. I have a Hexacopter from FPVPilot and running
on APM2, 880kv motors, 10x4.7 APC slow flyer props, and two 4s 5000mah
lipos, and a Gopro HD 2 camera. So far, everything seems rock solid
and I'm roaring to go, but I like to play on the safe side, since I
don't have extra funds to be wasting on broken parts or worse.
Hopefully soon, I'll be able to fly comfortably, right now I'm still
practicing to hover in my living room. Let me know if you are
interested in exchanging phone numbers or setting a meet date.

Hi James - The field next to Irvine Lake is Black Starr, run by OCMA. It's $100 a year to get a key. Lots of good pilots there but never saw anyone doing FPV and a lot of the guys there are kind of "old school" snobby in my opinion. They don't get excited about new stuff.

With FPV you can fly almost anywhere, if you've got the balls! I've met two other guys in this area this past year that are flying fpv. One is a 17 year old kid who flies fpv via goggles incredibly well. The other is a 25 year old guy that is just getting into it and he really loves it. I'm 55 but have only been flying RC for 3 years so we're all kind of learning together. I have too much equipment and spend way too much money on this stuff. The other two guys are more conservative and could probably help you make the right decisions with buying things so you don't spend to much or get the wrong stuff.

It would be great to get together some weekend. For me it's usually Saturday and Sunday afternoons when I'm available to meet and/or fly, from around 2pm until sundown. There is a good "electric only" place in Costa Mesa where we could fly, and there is a field by UCI in Irvine where I've been flying for over 2 years. Only a couple other people fly there, and I like it that way because you can fly as much as you want and you don't have anyone giving you bad advice!

If you're hovering in your living room without any crashes, you're ready to rock-n-roll outside, but you're going to have to accept that you're going to have crashes now and then, it just happens... Get some extra props, at the very least.

My work phone is 714-566-1444 and it's fine to call me there, or we can set up a time to meet via email. My cell phone works so sporadically it's hardly worth giving out the number.

Hope to hear back from you!

Corey

Hi Corey,

I like the UCI field idea. I went to school there and feel
comfortable with that area. It's quiet, and I like the idea that
there are only a few guys flying around. I need to focus without
someone rushing me into a crash. I'm 42 and just started with this
stuff, but I can already tell that it will be my hobby for a long
time. My goal is to capture some great aerial footage on camera, so
I'm not really that into acrobatic flying. Some smooth sailing is
what I'm looking for, nice and easy like butter in the air. I've
watched some FPV videos on you tube and it always looks so good when
the pilot can fly rock solid and smooth. My cell phone is 714
622-9978. I can fly on weekends as well but only from dawn until
about 2, then I have to get to work. Mondays and Tuesdays are good
for all day, since I have those two days off of work. I'm estimating
that I'll be ready to take it to the open air in about 2 weeks. In
the meantime, I'll keep in touch via phone or email. I'll send you
some photos of my hexacopter. Talk to you soon!

I'm in Irvine (405 and Culver) who just started about two months ago.

I am working on building two quads: flydumini and nanoquad.  Trying to see if I can put a HackHD camera on mine.
