Hi Jack - We met briefly a couple months ago when I came out to your home field with my fpv tricopter (KK board) and Udrones quad (RTF Arducopter). You helped me with the Arducopter settings and it definitely flew a lot better after that. You were also the one who turned me on to the xAircraft frame and I bought a couple of them shortly after that. One is an RTF V8 with the full DJI stabilization set-up from FPVhobby that I really LOVE, and the other one is a stock 650 quad from CNC that I still haven't put together. The drive out to Whittier from Tustin was a little bit too long to get me hooked, but I'd definitely like to get back together again with you sometime soon! Thanks again for the Arducopter help!

Hi James - The field next to Irvine Lake is Black Starr, run by OCMA. It's $100 a year to get a key. Lots of good pilots there but never saw anyone doing FPV and a lot of the guys there are kind of "old school" snobby in my opinion. They don't get excited about new stuff.
With FPV you can fly almost anywhere, if you've got the balls! I've met two other guys in this area this past year that are flying fpv. One is a 17 year old kid who flies fpv via goggles incredibly well. The other is a 25 year old guy that is just getting into it and he really loves it. I'm 55 but have only been flying RC for 3 years so we're all kind of learning together. I have too much equipment and spend way too much money on this stuff. The other two guys are more conservative and could probably help you make the right decisions with buying things so you don't spend to much or get the wrong stuff.
It would be great to get together some weekend. For me it's usually Saturday and Sunday afternoons when I'm available to meet and/or fly, from around 2pm until sundown. There is a good "electric only" place in Costa Mesa where we could fly, and there is a field by UCI in Irvine where I've been flying for over 2 years. Only a couple other people fly there, and I like it that way because you can fly as much as you want and you don't have anyone giving you bad advice!
If you're hovering in your living room without any crashes, you're ready to rock-n-roll outside, but you're going to have to accept that you're going to have crashes now and then, it just happens... Get some extra props, at the very least.
My work phone is 714-566-1444 and it's fine to call me there, or we can set up a time to meet via email. My cell phone works so sporadically it's hardly worth giving out the number.
Hope to hear back from you!
