Good morning Los Alamos Scouts,
The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Los Alamos Branch 4112 is running a
food drive to benefit the Food Depot in Santa Fe and needs our help to be successful. The drive is
one week from today so please sign up soon so we understand how much support we can provide. The sign-up is at the link just below, and more details follow.
The letter carriers will request that people leave donations on their porches that morning, and we will also collect donations at local grocery stores. The central collection point is the First United Methodist Church (FUMC) in Los Alamos next to Sullivan Field.
These are the tasks we need:
- Collect donations from neighborhoods in the morning.
- Preliminary food pick up - quickly sweep through neighborhoods before the letter carriers complete their rounds and gather visible donations. Not meant to be comprehensive, just to keep the letter carriers from having to do it all themselves later in the day, which speeds up the whole process.
- ~One car with a few scouts sweeps through a neighborhood, collects donations, and returns food to the FUMC collection point.
- Collect donations from grocery stores - Smith's in LA and WR and Los Alamos Coop Market
- There's a flyer attached that we'll get printed for you to hand out. In general, they're interested in non-perishable food items, personal products, and baby supplies.
- Suggested 1 hour shifts from 11-3
- The last shift may go a little long due to transport arrangements
- Transport store donations to FUMC collection point
- We need a way of getting donations from the stores to the collection point.
- ~One car with a few scouts collects from each store then drops off at FUMC collection point.
- Suggested 1 hour shifts from 11:30-3:30, offset from the store collections
- Sort, box, and load food at the FUMC collection point at the end of the day, starting at 3:00.
- There is also a potential "stand-by" request for the afternoon that I didn't add to the sign-up, but if the letter carrier's trucks get too full, they would like to be able to call someone to come collect the donations rather than taking the time to bring it to the collection point and then having to return to their routes. Please contact Tim Pacheco, the NALC Branch President, if you would like to be on stand-by for this. Depending on how effective our neighborhood collections are in the morning, this may not be needed.
Please provide a contact phone number for the storefront and store transport shifts to aid communication between those.
The sign-up is my creation to try to meet those needs, so times, neighborhoods, number of Scouts requested, etc. are negotiable. I'd really like to not have gaps in the storefront times, preferring to start later or end earlier if we can't staff all requested times so we don't leave donations or supplies sitting unattended.
Contact information for Tim Pacheco, the NALC Branch President, is
(505) 690-7867,
tim.g....@gmail.com . Please contact him and me with any questions and we'll get them sorted out quickly.
Yours in Scouting,
Dan Coupland
