Hello, I replanted my new lophophora williamsii specimen a few days
ago but I just noticed some cuts on the skin. They might have been
caused by temperature fluctuations, but I can't say for sure.

Should I be worried? It is outside during the day time (50-60F) and I
bring it inside during the night to prevent it from getting frost.

No - use powdered sulfur or active charcoal and blow up this powder on the
cuts. It means, actually , your soil is too rich on Nitrates!!! - Lophophora
likes clay ( in pellets) with bricks pieces and sand, may be some sphagnum
- nothing else. Clay is necessary for good grow of Lophophora's parsnip :)
God bless

Ah, that makes perfect sense! I used a commercial cactus soil (rich in
organic matter), so next time I will make my own batch.

I'm off to the store! Thanks :)

Just got back and did what was suggested...

Also, upon receiving my specimen, I immediately planted (again, in
commercial cactus soil..."fast-draining formula") it and watered it
thoroughly, until water started to drain from the pot. Temperatures
have been cold so the soil has stayed moist, and I am afraid that the
roots will rot... should I just let nature its thing, or should I
intervene?

Hey, - your Lophophora is not doing well, I see. Take it out of soil - rinse
roots thoroughly, make hot root bath - water tolerance of your elbow or
little warmer , hng it somehow the way - that only root part will be in
water, plant - out of water and keep it for 30 min, preserving as possible
temperature of the water. Then - dry roots - only vertically place Loph. -
roots hangs freely down for 2 days, then - replant it in the way I
suggested. You will see results - bath is very stimulating both immune
resistance and grow factor for plant. Powder sulfur or charcoal in the
cracks after procedure before planting it.

Excellent tips!! Although the state of my specimen is disappointing
right now, I hope it will bounce back. I will make a sort of holder
for it (to keep the roots hanging) and will do the procedure you
outlined.

Would you suggest adding some crushed up or whole clay balls (the
hydroponic kind) to the soil (for better drainage)? A friend of mine
plenty extra that he could give me. I do not know if any local stores
carry the clay pellets you mentioned.
