I just finished Neil Stephensons "Anathem". hmm, what can I say but fun, deep, works for me on many levels and I will definetly re read this one cause there is alot in it to take in. Hard science, philosophy, and always with a great sense of humor and adventure.

Currently: "River of Gods" by Ian McDonald, i really love this one, it's starting to leave "Kansas" now and head down the rabbit hole. Oops mixed that up, or did I... Bwaha.

Recently: Iain M Banks "Matter" Excellent! As usual for his "Culture" stories. If You haven't read one. I like "Excession" or "Look to Windward" to start ya. They are addictive.

More on the Culture;

Anyone else? I am always looking...

jeff.....the CULTURE books look interesting, i have never heard of them.....looks like a lot of fun reading.....i wrote down the other 2 that you suggested.....thanks.....i just finished "A SOLDIER OF THE GREAT WAR" one of MARK HELPRIN'S books, a bit "wordy" but i enjoyed it very much as with "REFINER'S FIRE", "FREDDY AND FREDRICA", and "A WINTER'S TALE".....just started "CITY AT THE END OF TIME" by GREG BEAR.....i have JOHN LECARE'S (sp) newest, name of which i can not remeber
waiting for me.....finished off his "TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY" trilogy and several others that i can't remember the titles to.....i like him very much.....for a quick read, anything by JAMES LEE BURKE or STEPHEN HUNTER, bad good guys vs. good bad guys.....my brother has been giving me lots of historic fiction, mostly dealing with the romans, good stuff and i feel i'm learning something (maybe not though).....i have grown to love the library, tell them what you want and they get it for you, what a concept.....i walk out with 4 books that would have cost me over $100.00.....LUV IT.....now that the election is over, there is no need for me to watch the news and the pundits so i've cleaned off my glasses and i'm ready to roll.....yumm!.....michael

Cloud Atlas, Ah yes, that was you! When you mentioned it before I ordered it from Amazon and very much enjoyed it. Another that I plan to read again. Very cool read.

If you like detective stuff you might try Iain Banks (no M when writting non sci fi) other genres. I found some of it too dark for me oddly enough.

I am printing your other email and will be hitting the library soon so thanks. I also love historical fiction and some non fiction if it's not to dry. So anything good let me know.

Also of major note is Dan Simmons. The Hyperion series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyperion_(novel)

and all his other sci fi and other styles are very good. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Simmons

i enjoyed just about all of dan simmons, HYPERION etc. was a lot of fun, full of neat ideas.....what blew me away the most in CLOUD ATLAS was the writters ability to write "dialect", no easy task i would imagine.....THE DIAMOND AGE another good one.....ZINDELL'S "NEVERNESS" series was very enjoyable also.....i'm enjoying BEAR'S  "CITY AT THE END OF TIME" as i had mentioned, sci-fi has been iffy at best lately.....that is all that i read for the longest time but i'm having a hard time finding
anything that attracts me now.....i'm tempted to start writing down the books that i read, all of the historical fiction books have gone back to my brother so i'm hard pressed to come up with titles and authors, when i visit him i'll jot down some....."AZTEC" and the other books in this series were fun and   a book called "RAPTOR" were very good.....what i find fun is after doing a marathon "read", many books in a short period of time, is thinking back on all the stories and having them all meld into some crazy mismash in my mind.....ahhhhhhhhhh age!.....t.v. sucks, and most movies are a let down and cost way too much to see, i wouldn't pay $10 to see myself for goodness sake....:).....so reading it is.....i want to start a movement that when finding a typo in a book one should get a refund, it's akin to the film breaking in a movie and for the price of a book, hardback or paperback there should be no typos etc.....$24.99 for a book, $32. in canada (are canadians that much richer?) is a crime and it seemed to happen all at once sort of like a house that last week cost $60,000 several months later was selling for $100,000.....then we wonder what HAPPENED to our economy.....i will say though, milk tastes soooo much better since it began to cost more than $4 a gallon.....damn those cows!!!!!.....m

"Sloosha's crossin' an' ev'rythin' after" Cloud Atlas

Difficult to write and a challenge to read for me at times but once I got into it twas real fun.

"what I find fun is after doing a marathon "read", many books in a short period of time, is thinking back on all the stories and having them all meld into some crazy mismash in my mind.....ahhhhhhhhhh age!....."

For sure, haha, that's it! I have re read books and then realized that I had a crossbreed story firmly in my mind that was never written, I don't think age so much tho', cause I was like that from an early age. My Mom saw to it that by first grade I could read. She told the sory of me going off to school on the first day with an Arthur C Clark book on Rocketships. This did me no good with teachers and classmates who were struggling through Dick and Jane, lol.
I read librarys by the foot all through school. Funny how my spelling is so atrocious. Thank God for spellcheckers.

"t.v. sucks, and most movies are a let down and cost way too much to see"

Your preaching to the choir bro'. I went to a movie with my girl recently and the drinks and popcorn was even more than the movie! And you know how I feel 'bout teee veee... My spell checker hates my attempts at dialect here, hehe.

"i'm having a hard time finding
anything (sf) that attracts me now....."

I have been going through Amazon to find new sf books and it is really bleak. I have been getting alot more particular in my waning years about what I read and have actually not finished several. I get 6 or 8 at the library in hopes one or two will grab my interests. I have followed people through the sf section (or others) and asked them what they are reading. I have to be careful of stalking laws...

Well, I got my new and improved green screen up and the day off so I need to get busy on my next hit video, lol.
I might be getting OT for this OT group thread so I'll stop here....x
