Seeking a Harm Reduction Clinician

We have a unique and challenging clinical opportunity at our Substance Use & Misuse Clinical Service Program located at Harborside Health Center, Oakland CA. Harborside Health Center is a cutting edge medical cannabis facility (http://www.harborsidehealthcenter.com/index.html) that has invested in an innovative harm reduction program. This is a non-judgmental, consumer-driven program that aims to increase access to alternative substance use and misuse services for those who seek it. The program has been serving patients for nearly 2 years.

Our program has an evidence-based eclectic framework based on tenets of the harm reduction model, cognitive-behavioral theories, and positive psychology. We believe that understanding motivational interviewing techniques and working under the ‘stages of change’ umbrella is fundamental. Knowledge of cognitive restructuring and behavior modification techniques is also important. Drug misuse is multifaceted therefore a ‘holistic view’ grounds all services. Because individual strengths, problems, needs, and resources vary greatly an individualized lens is essential in all practice.

Patients seeking services range from those seeking more information about medical cannabis and other substances to patients looking to reduce risks to patients seeking moderation management support to those seeking to exit the use of particular substances such as tobacco, alcohol, or pharmaceuticals.

We are seeking an experienced harm reduction clinician for brief individual one-on-one counseling, to conduct individual consultation, assessment and referral, and to facilitate harm reduction educational and therapeutic groups.

Individual sessions include: supported patient self-discovery to assess issues, implementation of harm reduction and moderation management skills, goal setting, skill building, etc. You will see approximately 6 patients per week.

Consultations are a semi-structured interview style session including information sharing, formal assessment, recommendations and patient follow-up.

You will also lead a weekly 1-hour group session focused on medical cannabis information and harm reduction. To apply you must have extensive understanding of medical cannabis literature.

This is an hourly position and we ask for a commitment of between 7 to 9 hours per week. You must carry your own general and liability insurance. Position open immediately. Qualified and serious inquiries only. Please send resume or curriculum vitae to Jennifer Janichek, MA at janichek.ha...@gmail.com
