Emily Starr Bean <emily.st...@gmail.com>RAVEN HOUSE
We are a group of 13-14 mostly 20-somethings living cooperatively in
both units of a 2-unit house located 4 blocks from Ashby BART in South
Berkeley.
We are vegans, vegetarians, and omnivores, but we purchase food without
animal-products communally, with egg/milk/cheese/meat etc.
bought by individuals personally. One of our kitchens is strictly
vegetarian for the comfort of vegetarians. We purchase communal food
that is as organic and as local as possible- produce from the farmer's
market, staple items in bulk from a distributor, and other randoms (nut
butters, earth-friendly/non-toxic cleaning products) from the store.
Sustainability and food justice is an important house value. We seek to
live with people who are conscious of their consumption habits and
environmental footprint.
We have bimonthly meetings that operate by consensus, and we are excited
about the energy that our new housemates will bring to this setting.
Builders and creators (of all types--physically, socially, politically,
intellectually) are encouraged to apply.
We all participate in a chore system that requires each of us to do 2
chores per week (cleaning, shopping) and changes monthly(ish). This is
the minimum requirement, but we each take on extra tasks as needed.
Besides the usual cleaning tasks, the list of house chores includes
cooking communal dinners 4 nights a week.
This is a pro-queer, -trans, -woman house. We do not tolerate racism or other forms of hate.
We do not have or want a TV.
Most of us are involved in activities surrounding social justice,
economic justice, peace building, environment healing, sustainable food
movement, and education.
THE HOUSE
We share a 2 story house with two kitchens, two living rooms, 4
bathrooms, two sets of laundry machines, and a clothesline. We have a
garden, 4 hens, a driveway, a bike garage, and a tool shed.
THE ROOM
One of the best rooms in the house. It is medium-sized, has two large
windows (facing west and north) with a lot of sun in the
afternoon/evening, balcony-access, and a large walk-in closet. It is a
little removed from common space, so there is never any noise
disturbance. Rent is usually around $560, but fluctuates within a $10
range in each direction. Utilities generally cost about $25-$30, and
food ranges between $60 and $100 (you could live off house food if
interested) each month.
