The Indian Pharmacopoeia (IP) is a compendium of standards for the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines produced and/or marketed in India. It is published by the Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) on behalf of the Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare. The IP is a legal document that prescribes the requirements for the licensing, inspection and distribution of drugs in India. It also serves as a reference book for the health professionals, researchers, students and drug regulatory authorities.
The IP 2014 is the seventh edition of the IP, which supersedes the IP 2010. It is published in four volumes, containing a total of 2548 monographs and 177 general chapters. The scope of the IP 2014 has been extended to include products of biotechnology, indigenous herbs and herbal products, veterinary vaccines and additional antiretroviral drugs and formulations, inclusive of commonly used fixed-dose combinations. The IP 2014 also incorporates the latest scientific and technological developments in the field of pharmaceuticals, such as nanotechnology, stem cell therapy, gene therapy and biosimilars. The IP 2014 aims to harmonize with the international standards and practices, such as those of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Conference on Harmonisation (ICH), the Pharmacopoeia of Japan (JP), the European Pharmacopoeia (EP) and the United States Pharmacopeia (USP).
The IP 2014 is available in both print and electronic formats. The print version consists of four hardbound volumes, each with a CD-ROM containing the full text of the IP 2014 in PDF format. The electronic version can be accessed online through the IPC website or through a subscription-based service called e-IP. The e-IP provides a user-friendly interface for searching, browsing and downloading the monographs and general chapters of the IP 2014. The e-IP also offers features such as bookmarks, annotations, cross-references, hyperlinks and updates.
The IP 2014 is important for ensuring the quality, safety and efficacy of medicines in India. It provides a set of minimum standards that must be complied with by the manufacturers and suppliers of drugs. It also helps in preventing substandard, spurious, adulterated or counterfeit drugs from entering the market. The IP 2014 also facilitates the trade and export of drugs from India by meeting the expectations and requirements of the global market. The IP 2014 also contributes to the advancement of scientific knowledge and innovation in the field of pharmaceuticals by incorporating the latest research findings and technologies.
