Long Walks

Hello. My name is Andy and every now and then, I get people together and we go for a long walk.

The purpose of this Google Group is to organize folks for these walks. Up until now I'd done it through word-of-mouth, e-mail to my friends, and maybe a flier in a hostel or three. But when JFK Walk 2012 was written up in the NY Times ( nyti.ms/OvmBfC ), a fair number of people asked if they could be "put on my mailing list". Which begs the obvious thought for someone without a mailing list, "I guess I'd better make a mailing list." So here it is.

Some history: I've been pulling these walk together since Labor Day weekend 2004. It was really nice out, so my friend Vicki and I decided to go for a long walk. I arbitrarily picked JFK Airport as a destination because I was curious about all the neighborhoods which we would be going through. Also, having the final destination of the walk be an airport worked well aesthetically. Airports are very grand and they work well as a finale.

I've also done walks from the top of Manhattan to the bottom and the top of The Bronx to the bottom. I also spontaneously did a walk one day from my mother-in-law's house at the time in Chico, CA to the Chico Airport. I have some other ambitious ideas for walks bouncing around my head too. Stay tuned for those!

Anyway, welcome to the group. To get updates on walks, check back often or just set your subscription to "Send an Email for Each Message" (you get an e-mail notification about upcoming walks). I won't send very many e-mails, I promise.

Cheers,
Andy
