Hi all

I would argue that in the following two short paragraphs below Doug (writing to Hugh) accurately but VERYsuccinctly summarizes some of the main challenges facing today's most thoughtful Lonerganian  interpreters. It is this challenge that Pierre and  II take up in our Attemtive, Intelligemt, Reflective, Responsible book. I quote Doug's two paragraphs STRESSING the  COMPREHENSIVE  element. With the recent development of AI a new facet has emerged that Pierre and I could only allude to.

I have already a couple of times stressed here that  by and of itself AI cannot solve the dilemmas humanity and  the planet now face. We Lonerganians today are faced--but NOT "invited" by the powers that be to offer GEM-FS as a possible and needed attempt to address the issues in a COMPREHENSIVE way, namely a workeable method but only IF specialists of all kinds could and would agree to cooperate in GEM;-FS fashion. Phil was still alive when Pierre and I were writing our book and he encouraged us in our project. YES, the need to  cooperate, collaborate at each stage. That implies the need to address the limitations of AI which cannot possibly address the ethical and moral challenges now facing the planet by its intelligent, responsible humans. Pope Leo XIV has also stressed AI's limitations,  John

I believe what you write is an accurate characterization of what Phil hopefully expected, "We are to hope and work towards finding at each stage a global operator that will lift us towards the
next decade." although I think he was willing to consider change over time in centuries.

I recall how an early critic of Lonergan complained that L's program wouldn't succeed unless it was comprehensive.  In that regard, I recall how Phil had hopes of at least finding a leading economist to help.  Maybe an AI superintelligence could be the "operator" although I doubt that's possible.  Doug
