note -

Adam Tooze's story from "Crashed"(2018) especially the section on how China managed its economy through the 2008 financial crisis is both compelling and illuminating, and in my view highly instructive for our present situation. It presents certain concrete content for my urgings in certain quarters for a Christian-Marxist dialogue or for its renewal. I say 'Christian-Marxist'', I could just as well say 'Liberal-Marxist' because Christianity in general and for the most part has become captured by liberalism in my view. And the deafening silence among intellectuals on these matters that I'm finding in so many quarters makes me deeply worried that the Western intellectual culture in general and for the most part is unable to imagine any future beyond capitalism and liberalism.

Hugh, I agree fully on your characterizaation of "the world order and its creative tensions." Of course, China's Xi dictator is also a dangerous man in many respects.

I have'n read Tooze's book but to repeat what I said here a couple of days ago, Pope Francis and Pope Leo XIV and as, had Lonergan, have also called attention to the threats of a so-called liberal capitalism of the type Mankiz advocated--one of the central themes of our book Attentive, Intelligent, Rational, and Responsible.  John

John,

Is it fair to ask what it is that persuades you to write -

"Of course, China's Xi dictator is also a dangerous man in many respects."?

I recall you and Adrial Fitzgerald going back and forth with some considerable intensity
on such matters a while back.
I'm not interested in defending or debating on Xi or the Chinese regime ... just in hearing
and hopefully better understanding again what is the basis
for your view or position on China that leads you to say this ...

thanks
Hugh

Hugh

China under Xi has been persecuting Uighurs, see this link or google the topic

Christians are controlled, e g. in their insisting in having the last word in the appointment of bishops and in not-seldom destroying of Christians places of worship.....

It is not as bad as it was a few decades ago when China systematically imprisoned foreign missionaries. Again, you can google the topic
