Hugh and all,

I had written a rather long answer to Hugh's posting on Spinoza. My answer did not make it to our Lonergan site. Part of what I had written included the following reference to Paul Kniter's book:

Winthout Buddha I Could Not Be a Christian by theologian Paul F. Knitter  outlines how Buddhist practices and perspectives helped him overcome a faith crisis, allowing him to engage more deeply with Christianity. Knitter argues that Buddhism acted as a "silent partner," providing new perspectives that allowed him to see fresh meanings in the Gospel while resolving doubts.

South Asian Buddhists propounded what is now called Hinayama (the lower vehicle) while the Chinese, Koreans and Japanese developed Mahayana Buddhism's so-called higher vehicle. Knitter's book is very helpful for promoting interfaith-interreligious dialogue. Those interested might google some of the above topics,

John
