Hi all, David Bibby and Hugh have within the past two days addressed the writings of Heidegger, Rahner and Lonergan. I think it is fair to say that one of Lonergan's contributions has been his delineation of the role of the data of consciounssess as these complement the data of sense in human cognition and the scientific enterprise. That is an abbreviated way of referring to his achiement--quite a generalization, of course.. For the sake of providing a background to the above claim, I would refer you

1) this handbook of 20th Century Philosophy

Twentieth-Century Western Philosophy of Religion 1900-2000

Handbook of Contemporary Philosophy of Religion  by

The book deals in its chapters 15-17 with  the following topics

15. Existential Philosophy: Karl Jaspers; Martin Heidegger; Jean-Paul Sartre; Gabriel Marcel; Rudolf Bultmann; Paul Tillich; John Macquarrie; Fritz Buri. 16. Neo-Thomism: Jacques Maritain; Etienne Gilson; Austin Farrer; Emerich Coreth; Karl Rahner; Bernard Lonergan. 17. Process Philosophy: Henri Bergson; Pierre Teilhard de Chardin; Alfred North Whitehead; Charles Hartshorne; Bowman Clarke; Schubert Ogden; John Cobb; David Ray Griffin. Part Four: Philosophy of Religion at the Turn of the Twenty-First Century.  (I would say that Heidegger tried to confront nihilism: that in real life did not prevent him from joining the Nazi party in 1933, the year Hitler took over the government.

2) More precisely--as to the data of consciousness-- Henri Bergson's 1889 book (based on his doctoral dissertation)  is the year of Heidegger's birth. Time and Free Will: An Essay on the Immediate Data of Consciousness is Bergson's doctoral thesis. In my own dissertation (Marquette Univ. 1977) I devoted some 20 pages examining how Lonergan differs from Heidegger's take on being and Being.

3) Finally, as to another broad generalization on Rahner's Spirit in the World (first published in 1957 in German), I here quote Firorenza's Introduction, p. xix, that "Rahner's attempt to confront the medieval scholastic philosophy with Aquinas with the problems and questions of modern philosophy..... is vitally important because it concerns the central problem of philosophy, namely, the nature and possibility of metaphysics." Fiorenza adds that Rahner has "taken his guidelines from the work" of Heidegger and Marechal. (We have here previously discussed some implications of Spirit in the World and their relevance to and differences from Lonergan's lifework).  My own way of  facing such complex problems is summarized in my dissertation's outline of Lonergan's eight functional specialties, e. g. the crucial roles of foundations, policy, practice and communications in addressing our present societies' mind-boggling problems. As of now in 2024, the challenges include addressing AI technological breakthroughs as well as the problems with which these breakthroughs confront us in an environmentally-threatened world,      John

John,

You say two things of interest below -

In my own dissertation (Marquette Univ. 1977) I devoted some 20 pages examining how Lonergan differs from Heidegger's take on being and Being.

... Rahner has "taken his guidelines from the work" of Heidegger and Marechal.

Is it possible for you to say more on these matters, especially the first item?

Can you do this in a summary manner or by providing links to the texts referenced ...

thanks

Hugh

Hugh,

I completed and submitted my PhD dissertation in 1977--47 years ago--before the Internet was functional. As much as I would like to respond in a positive way, the time factor makes it impossible for me to do so. As you note, interlibrary loans are a pain in the neck and virtually impractical. So I cannot submit more than I already have. My dissertation also included many references and appeals to liberation and political theologies of the time. Thanks for your interest,

I have access to it.  It appears Marquette recently purchased a license for ePublications, but these restrictions, like the order has with Lonergan's work, simply means that important work isn't shared - a block to science.

Doug, thanks for that INFO. I did download "out", but have not yet been able to open the file. Perhaps what you say about the "NOT sharing" restriction is the problem,  John
