David Bohm and Bernard Lonergan were two major 20th-century thinkers who independently sought to overcome scientific reductionism. Both proposed complex, non-fragmented theories of consciousness and reality, though Bohm approached it as a quantum physicist, and Lonergan as a philosopher-theologian using cognitional theory.

Thxs John. Hope your post gains traction and takes away from the “square circle” like the subject of Christian Marxism.

Tony,

Bohmn - Lonergan fine ...

but in the interest of some epistemological resistance ...

to speak of 'christian-marxism' as a 'square circle' needs to be challenged directly ...

where are you coming from with such a remark ?

and have you actually read the AIRR text, which with little doubt provides a platform

for such a 'discussion' or 'engagement' in the first place ?

it would be a very sad myopia, if the common lonerganian perspective should

rest upon such an unfortunate reduction ...

Hugh, my interest on this list has to do with questions of life and death. Someone once commented that Insight and Method should be on your desk and used as the best self-help books ever printed.  Given that, I perceive your many comments – especially on Karl Marx- through different filtered glasses. Pardon me if through these glasses I cannot dialect with you as an educated economist.

Through these glasses, I place Marx as a consummate materialist. I view his ideas as aligning with Darwin more than with Christianity in general. Hence, my comment that Christian Marxism is a “squared circle”.  Without a transcendent view of reality as found in L’s philosophy, one could never have a fundamental view of how Marx’s ideas affect the real world economies.  (e.g. Cuba ,USSR,Venezuela and others).

Using your impressive knowledge on economics, I suggest that you can certainly enlighten us on this list  by giving us your take on “ Capitalist  Christianity” instead. Here, there is certainly room for transcendence.

OK Tony,

I understand a little better where you are coming from ...

I'm not an economist but one trained in philosophy

and so come at the question of economy philosophically.

I still believe strongly that one of the great values in

Raymaker's and Whalon's AIRR(2023) text is in how, from the Lonergan-Christian side,

it has both opened up and provided a platform

for the serious discussion and renewed appreciation

of the Marxist philosophical and economic contribution ...

especially for what they refer to as the two communal-collective conversions in the economic and ecological orders.

We are talking about a necessary move from Lonergan's well known personal authenticity

towards a communal-collective authenticity.

Again, this is no longer an optional matter for our species or the planet ...

and yes my argument is that christian thought, such as we have

in the Lonergan school and tradition, needs serious engagement with Marxism,

and that the AIRR text, at least implicitly, points to this as well.

It is for the good of both sides ...

Perhaps this only becomes evident upon a close and careful reading,

(which admittedly is not always easy with this text)

which my previously attached critical review attempts to provide ...

Greetings:
It is nice to see this group as it continues. I've finally got news to share...

1. Background infoDemocrats Abroad (DA) is a 'state level' status part of the Democratic Party National Committee, formally established around 1976. It sends a delegation to the National Convention and has 17 delegate votes. It exists to help US citizens living overseas to vote, to support Party goals, but also to serve as a mechanism to bring ex-pat lessons to light for the betterment of our nation. I've been a member if Democrats Abroad/Denmark for years, long curious about how academic research could inform the political sphere. The GOP has no such functional equivalent overseas operation. There are, just to note, between 7-9 million U.S. citizens living outside the U.S. - an astonishing number, that includes US military, and is considerably larger than the population of many nations, like Denmark. DA has but a fraction of this group at present, but does well as a voluntary organization.

2. This week: Their annual general meeting is May 30, being held in Nairobi, Kenya. Attendance is virtual/actual. Please send positive vibes that way next weekend, as...

3. Insight and US political party praxis: Over the past few months, I've been working a document through several rounds of Progressive Democrats caucus sessions to craft language and then six zoomed Town Hall meetings for voting delegates across the time zones to meet, discuss, and refine filed Resolutions (there were 13). After the last Town Hall, the hosting Resolutions Committee then offered the following recommendation on Resolution 7: "Employment with Justice in the United States workplace." My Resolution aims at the 2028 Presidential year party platform. I've attached it and the 2 min. pitch I gave at the serial Town Hall meetings in zoomland for the voting delegates and interested members. Each session ran about three hours.

The format and language (lots of whereas....)  is obligatory, if curiously archaic. In the Resolution itself, Endnote 2 carries a lot of necessary historical detail. And, for Lonergan scholars, there is Endnote 8, which could be a first in terms of explicitly getting his scholarship into US political party platform language.

> If accepted next week, it will be published and fed into the 2028 Democratic Party platform development process. The Resolutions Committee offered this verdict on the attached last Saturday. DPCA=Democratic Party Committee Abroad.

"R7. On Employment with Justice in the United States Workplace
Recommendation: UNANIMOUS CONSENT

This resolution asks that language be included in the 2028 DPCA Platform and that members of the DPCA advocate for this elsewhere in the Democratic ecosphere. It does not require the use of any organizational resources, and does not repeat what is in the current 2024 DPCA Platform (hence introduces something new). It also has a “messaging” aspect to it that may be useful during this present election cycle, and may be similarly useful to both local leaders and the communications team to promote voter engagement and get out the vote efforts.

It became apparent during the Town Halls that this resolution could be a candidate for unanimous consent,
and the Resolutions Committee recommends this action to the body."

- Co-sponsors will be listed at the conclusion of the sponsoring process now underway in advance of the general meeting. Only elected voting delegates can co-sponsor.

I'll report back on the upshot. That report will be much shorter than this one, I promise. :-)

Best,
Charlie
