Pope Leo, heading for Turkey and Lebanon, will, to some extent, have to address some of the religious and secular divisions in our world. The abstract below  reflecting on a possible Vatican III Council summarizes some of the issues that most likely underly some of the top-level issues awaiting Leo's encounters with political and religious leaders on his trip. Lonergan implicity and explicitly addressed some relevant bridges for fruitfully addressing cultural-political encounters today.

Steps toward Vatican III: Catholics Pathfinding a Global Spirituality with Islam and Buddshim

Lanham, MD: Globe Pequot Publishing Group Incorporated/Bloomsbury (2008  Copy   BIBTEX

Abstract

In the tradition of Catholic bridge-building the authors strive to bridge modernist secularism with the religious traditions of Christianity, Islam and Buddhism. It offers a "middle-way" based on a global ethic and a global spirituality. The role of community is emphasized as underpinning the book's bridging efforts.

John,

has Pope Leo actually condemned the genocide in Gaza yet?

I listen for this but have not been able to identify any outright condemnation.

There seems to be expressions of concern, and calls for prayers, ceasefires, and peace and so on ...

but has there to anyone's knowledge been an outright condemnation by the leadership in this

global institution?

John et al,

i'm of the view that it is the Left that in general and for the most part

has and has had for some time the right perspective on this Gaza situation and its implications.

and leaders in most Western institutions are out of touch or 'worse' ....

see -  https://jacobin.com/2025/10/italy-protest-gaza-general-strike

for something on the Pope's own Italian socio-political context.
