Four: A Divergent Collection by Veronica Roth is a compilation of five short stories, all told from the viewpoint of Tobias Eaton, a troubled young man who seizes control of his own life after discovering an old locker containing a strange and intriguing object. The second story in the collection is called Free Four: Before the Storm, which can be described as "a fantasy thriller." The third story, Four: A Divergent Collection, is focused on a terrorist plot. The fourth, A Matter of Life and Death, is the story that appears in the collected volume. As you might guess, all of these stories take place in a world deeply influenced by religion.

The novel starts out with A Divergent Collection: Before the Storm, a story that describes the aftermath of a terrorist attack on a college campus. The next story in the series, Four: A Divergent Collection, describes the story of a woman who has lost her unborn baby in an unexpected drowning. Then, in the final installment of the series, A Divergent Collection: Meridian, we're introduced to the main character, Val, a young woman from a wealthy family who lives an almost entirely sheltered life inside the safe walls of her mother's house. Unlike most Divergent novels, this one doesn't have a great number of secondary characters that periodically appear and disappear, nor does it offer much in the way of explanation for the events within the book. However, it does make a good story, and it does have some excellent illustrations.
