Hi All,
I'm just starting to experiment with Android, and also I'm thinking to
buy An Android phone. I'm based in UK. Which one would you recommend?
I can see HTC G1, G2 Touch...etc. Do they all come with the latest
Android OS. I could possibly buy one with an old OS, that wouldn't
include the latest addons, and features? I need your advise.
Regards

Hello Jairo,

I have tested the G1 and G2. I heard very good things about the hero. I would recommend the latter but did not really try it out. The G1 is the dev phones (keyboard/trackball and so forth) but a bit clumsy and big. The G2 is very nice IMO but the hero - from videos and comments - rocks.

BTW in terms of development, it does not really matter which one you choose. People tend to hack the G1 (several images/root access etc...) but I believe we will see this happening on other phones.
Samsung is the newcomer: http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/27/samsung-i7500-oled-handset-powered-by-android-dreams/ looks nice but can't comment to much

Hi Carl,
Thanks for the advice. I'll keep looking, it looks like there are many options. One more question please. Why the emulator is so slow. I got 2G ram, I'm using Eclipse plugin. I've seen lots of comments about this problem on forums. Is there any way to overcome this problems?
Thanks again.

Well the emulator is a full fledge OS running on top of qemu. 2G of RAM is the minimum I would suggest and a powerful processor is needed as well. For slow machine, I would suggest using your phone as test device - as long as you have one :)

Hi.

I bought HTC Hero from Orange last week, and I am quite happy with the
device.

Here are what I lov, like, ok, and hate

#Love it
* Teflon coated body(http://gizmodo.com/5302637/htc-heros-teflon-
coating-makes-the-iphone-feel-like-junk).iPhone owners gave me
complement.
* 5m pixel camera with zoom and auto focus

#Like it
* 3.5 mm jack
* Multi touch (not as good as iPhone though).
* Facebook & flickr integration. It tightly integrate with your
contact list, and you can see their contact info, update, and even
their photos. It's a bit annoying to link contact info and sns account
though.

# ok
* Twitter (it's just same as normal twitter client)
* Flash (I haven't used much yet)

# not much
* Battery (it might be better than G1, but still not as long as my
dumb Nokia phone, nor iPod touch)
* Multi Scene. I watched
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wn8XAeMzLZo&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Ephonedog%2Ecom%2Fcell%2Dphone%2Dvideos%2Fhtc%2Dhero%2Dbrowser%2Dscenes%2Dand%2Dthe%2Dkeyboard%2Easpx&feature=player_embedded
to flip different scenes. I don't find much use myself, and also took
a few seconds to flip between different scenes.

# Hate it.
* Even London Flagship Orange store did not have real phone(only
dummy), so could not try out in advance.
* Online purchase side. it's a bit cheaper to buy it online, but I had
all sorts of trouble and took almost 1 week for whole process to
complete. Also, they only deliver to your home address where your
debit card was registered. They even screwed up arranging my delivery
time, so I ended up staying home longer

Hope this helps.
