I don't know if this group is officially dead yet, but of note is that for the last few months Andrew NG (Next Generation) has trotted our the fourth of his five part Deep Learning Coursera course:

I've audited most of the first four, the fifth is supposed to be out soon.

So far it is very good, although I have to start doing the exercises rather than just have a sugar rush of working out what is what.

It all seems rather straight forward to me, but then these things always do without having gone through the exercises.

Also of note is that Netflix is now up to the 8th episode of Star Trek : Discovery.

It seems strange how Star Trek withered and died, and now its alive. I think it is rather marvellous myself. No red shirts, but there are black badges...

Also also of note was Blade Runner : 2049. Its like we're in the eighties again only without Maggie Thatcher. Although Theresa May has reverse initials...

regards,

Geoff

Hi Geoff,

Great to hear from you.

We were just talking about running a weekly online mob session in AgileVentures on the new deep learning courses.  Perhaps we could all link in ... are any of you in the agileventures slack?

https://www.agileventures.org <-- to sign up

I was also intrigued by the new star trek.

Didn't enjoy the new blade runner tbh, but really enjoyed the new mad max surprisingly!

Best, Sam

Thanks,

I'll sign up for your Agile Ventures Slack.
Convolutional Neural Networks, even cooler than I thought.

Although Geoffrey "I can't sit down" Hinton has given back-propagation
the finger and is going on about Capsule Networks, how long before
AndrewiNG does a course about those?

NIPS is where its at:

Star Trek looks good, although it takes to the fourth episode to get
over the introductions. The YouTube channel "Final Frontier" fills in
a lot of the cracks and sprinkles fermented thoughts all over it. It
looks to have been extremely well thought through, it really ties the
Universe together, I may never look at a mushroom the same way again.

Mad Max was quite a while ago. "Oh what a day!". Shiny and chome! Of
course mention should be made of Arrival. Where Stephen Wolfram comes
down to Earth to talk to mortals. Do you realise he invented modesty?

We were just talking about having a regular deep learning mob meetup at 1pm UTC on Mondays - working through this course: https://www.coursera.org/learn/neural-networks-deep-learning

We'd meet online - how would that time work?

I'm thinking that ultimately it would be Premium Mob with proceeds going to our charity AgileVentures: https://www.agileventures.org/premium_mob

Anybody interested?

Best, Sam

Hi Sugam,

That's quite a switch to move to Amsterdam, is this just a case of living in another country?

Did you just change offices with your company, or have you changed employer too?

Regards,

Geoff

Hi Simon (and everyone),

Happy New Year!

Part-time research degree at Oxford Uni's Internet Institute sounds cool - what are you studying in particular?

All my efforts are now going into the AgileVentures charity - our deep learning mob is now in week 5 - we've on week 3 of the Stanford CNN course.

If you or anyone else was interested in sponsoring under-privileged developers around the world to get an educational leg up while helping other charities, we'd love the support: https://www.agileventures.org/sponsorship

Check out this blog post from a female developer in Kenya:

https://medium.com/@cess/agile-ventures-experience-629c0e3028b0

I'd love to be doing more with everyone who has any spare time for online charity projects.  We have a machine learning system trying to predict when members in our charity will upgrade to paying memberships - just doing everything we can to make the charity sustainable.  All the code is open source:

https://github.com/AgileVentures/AutomatedPremiumModel

Hope you (and everyone) has a great 2018!

Best, Sam
